I have a cob mare who has always been very (can't think of the word?) good with pain? Example she had her sarcoids treated with liverpool cream beginning of summer this year, 6 applications but she never needed sedation. She's always loved being groomed, the harder the better, no ticklish spots nothing.
UNTIL Probably about 3 weeks ago now she's just started getting sensitive under her chest, tummy and around her armpits. If I take it slow and give her a really gentle massage, like barely touching her then build up the pressure she'll tolerate it but it's just not like her.
Things that have changed are the area, we were in Somerset on sandy soil and now we're in the midlands on very sticky clay soil which is really hard to brush out, could it be that? It's just not like her to be sensitive. Or could she have ulcers? I'm only aware of the most common signs like cribbing with ulcers. She does suffer from irritable bowels, it's triggered if she changes pasture but she hasn't changed pasture and her poos are delightful atm.
Any ideas? Vet will be out on Tuesday but the physio has looked at her already and there's no muscle spasm or tightness, she's just being sensitive and irritable. Almost like a typical mare!

My TB mare does this, this time every year! And the only sure way to solve it is to clip her ;)
It has emerged that my mare just has a serious issue with her winter coat, she hates it with a vengeance! As soon as she is clipped, problem solved! :D

I have only just realised this is the problem with my mare. this is my third wionter with her, and the first one of not clipping at end October, beginning November.
Normally she comes in at night and gets clipped around the same time so I always just assumed it was because she wanted to come in, this year she has been in 2 months and the mood is getting worse!

I tried to keep her hairy as she doesn't need clipping (she just doesn't sweat!) this winter, but I have got to the end of my tether and next weekend hopefully I am chopping it all off!

This is the first winter I've kept her in work, last winters I just gave up so didn't really notice if there was an issue or not. Now I need to find clippers...

Work isn't an issue for my mare, she just hates her winter woolies!!! :o
Never known a horse to actually hate their winter coat! Next year it is coming off as soon as it can!

Mine is sensitive because he has had his chest and belly clipped out! - he's normally got a rhino hide but always in the winter once he's clipped I have to use my softer brush and rubber groomy thing I have on his chest and tummy. Just wondering though as it's near her armpits whether she's got any mud in the creases there/under the hair? Mine had tiny bit of scabbing in one armpit before he was clipped as mud had got in under his thick long coat and then he'd got warm and bacteria had got going. Cleaned it up and put on cream and it cleared up.

Ooh spooky. My (newish) mare has had the same symptoms, although she also was tense in her back and then had a virus/temp part way through (not worked out if that was the cause, a symptom or totally unconnected).

She's getting over the virus and is better but still more tickly and sensitive than she used to be, and generally is a bit lacking in sparkle. She's coming back into work and will see how she goes, but I'm getting her clipped next week and was going to do a light trace, wonder if I should try a full clip instead?!

Imagine if it is a simple as winter coat - I ended up getting her scoped for stomach ulcers FGS ! (Wasn't ulcers.)
