I have two friends that both have mysteries. First one
Vet booked for tomorrow but Friday afternoon she spotted swellingon inside of canon bone. 17hand warmblood mare 19 years old. Previously damaged check ligament in April this year so just presumed it had reoccurred. Vet said treat as before but would come out Monday if any change.
So yesterday she was really lame and toe-pointing with strong throb, today much less lame and hoof care lady came and reckons it may be abscess brewing. So difficult as treatment for one is box rest and the other is movement. To be on the safe-side she is being rested and has been poultice too. Thoughts??
Number two
A 17 year old ex riding school pony who has some obvious previous scarring around girth area (white hairs) Really resenting touching of this area even though he has been out of riding school for three years. Actually squealed when area felt by a new trainer yesterday. Could this be scar tissue or gut issues or worse? He will be investigated but hacks and schools very happily as long as you tack up gently.

The first I would suspect an abscess, the swelling may be due to her resting the leg as the foot hurts being older and with the history swelling in the area of an old injury is fairly normal, a friend had hers "diagnosed" with a check ligament pull by a vet and was told up to 6 months box rest which for an arthritic old boy was not an option so pts was being considered, when I heard I said get the farrier who came out and found the offending abscess, lucky horse was back in the field the next day.

The second sounds as if he has some serious scar tissue which may be irritated at times, he may benefit from some physio as the area can become very tight, we have a tb in the yard who gets tight and sometimes sore in the girth area, from his racing days of having tight girths, he enjoys physio and it helps if he has regular massage in the area which helps maintain him between physio treatments.

Thanks BP, physio certainly couldn't do any harm. Not an area that would routinely get attention though. And we are all hoping for pus for number one!
