Im unsure what this bit is..

its a loosering (big rings) with straight mouth piece, one side of the mouthpiece has grooves on it.. looks like a breaking bit but without the keys... does anyone have any ideas what it is what its used for? Its quite old looking, came on a bridle i bought.

Thanks :D

You said the grooves are only on one side in which case it's not a twisted mouthpiece but a reversible.
You can change the feeling of the bit by putting it in smooth or grooved side resting on the bars. The grooved side is when you require 'more control'. It is commonly seen on driving or military bits where the image of all horses is desired to be identical but different horses have different bitting needs.
