Laminitis is an emergency. Tell them they are contravening the new welfare laws and may be prosecuted for causing/allowing pain and suffering to their animal - if their pony has it and they do not get professional attention to it.

If you go on the website for The Laminitis Trust, there are pages and pages of information. I printed them all off when Fred got it 2 years ago.

Im sure that many cases of grass induced laminitis is born out of ignorance which was unfortunately true in my case too.

They absolutely MUST call the vet! Laminitus is a very serious condition and must be treated immediately

if they wont listen to u contact RSPCA or ILPH, report them. fair enough they may not be being directly cruel but through their lack of knowledge and experiance they are inadverantly being cruel and causing unecessary suffering to an animal!!

My cob had it in 2004, she must get the vet in order to save its life. He is fine now but only because I got the vet and read everything there is about it. She is probably terrified and full of guilt, trying to ignore it anf hope it will go away, it wont!

There are many causes of laminitus - it may be that it is not the owner's fault that it has occured so they should not necessarily feel guilty that their pony has it. However, it does cause excrutiating pain to the horse, therefore if they ignore it they are guilty of causing unneccesary pain. Also regardless of the initial cause, once the pony gets over this bout there will need to be management changes to minimize the risk of it happening again.

Maybe explain to them just how painful the disease is, and if it is laminitus it WILL keep recurring and getting worse unless steps are taken to manage it. Eventually if nothing at all is done the pedal bone may rotate to the extent that it comes through the bottom of the foot.

Laminitus IS a serious welfare issue if steps are not taken to manage it

Well I spoke to the owners again the following day from this post, i advised them again to get the vet out.. they replied that the vet would only give them bute and advise rest, then went on to say they would ring their friend who's a racing trainer etc, so im hoping they will listen to him.
Im seriously concerned about this poor pony as every year she is lami prone! tbh i think they have gone to far already as it literally happened overnight, shes not overweight nor does she have a cresty neck, and there is no digital pulse at all.. Makes me think theres more to it although she showing all the laminetic signs. If something hasnt been done about it when I go up there tonight then I will be ringing the RSPCA, I think its disguisting how people think they can own horses with little knowledge and not take advice from other people who do know best, to be honest I think they would rather have the money in there pockets. Sick really
