...is it true they can't jump? I read somewhere that their conformation made it very difficult for them to jump. Just wondering.

They can jump! A girl I know jumps hers regularly and has taken him XC. He's never going to be a "show jumper" and she probably only jumps him 2'6'' to 3' (big enough in my book!)but he is fine doing it. He wouldn't be particularly quick in a jump off though. Some friesians are heavier built than others (hers is lighter weight) so I expect those type will fine it harder. Also, if they have been imported from Holland it is unlikely that they will ever have jumped, so if you did want to start jumping them they will have to start from scratch. They are much more suited to dressage though as they naturally have beautiful high stepping paces. (my sister has one!)

They are such gorgeous horses and I would love one but whatever I get I will have to share with horse mad daughter, who of course, wants to jump! She's only seven at the mo, but I imagine she will still like to go down to the jumping field near us and pop a few when she gets older. I'd love a baroque (SP?) type - I wonder if I could get her into dressage?!

Mine jumps like a stag! He was advertised as being a good jumper. I quote the advert " his jump is big, bold and brave" He loves cross country so go for it cause they can!

We're a long way off horse shopping yet as my old girl is still going strong, but where would you recommend a potential Friesian owner start? There is a UK society registered for them here but the web site isn't very informative.

I have had horses since I was 8 years old and I am now nearly 57 (god that makes me feel old, just typing it) and I am completely smitten. My boy is kind and gentle, cheeky enough to keep you on your toes but really is all mouth and trousers. He is brilliant in all traffic and tries very hard to please. All that and good looks. I am a total Friesian fan. There are always some for sale on Horsemart but be careful as a lot are being advertised at very low prices and obvious by the wording from other countries. I saw the same horse being advertised as can be seen in Manchester, Liverpool and Ireland! There was also a scam brought to light re Friesians in H & H a few months ago. Google and You Tube Friesians and there are some cracking videos and for sales on them. Once bitten, forever smitten
