So this is meant to be light hearted but I'm open to being told I'm wrong.

According to someone on Instagram, I'm cruel for putting a cheap, vets issued buster collar on Dobby because those type are terribly cruel.

Side note.....he's having the wear the damn thing because he bruised his leg being his usual, spacially aware self on Christmas morning and has given himself a skin infection trying to make his boo boo better.

We have tried all sorts with my beloved village idiot over the years but the old style cone is the only thing that works. Does he like it.....no he does not. Does he like to tell me about it by sitting on my footstool so I can't see the TV.....yes he does. In the grand scheme of things the pointy nosed cretin is burdened with, I'm sure he would tell you himself that it's by far not the worst.....I mean he also has to work for his food, is not allowed to sleep in the bed with me and is restarting his fitness routine as soon as I'm well enough so he can started disc work and get back to flyball (he likes the sport training just not the boring, slow fitness work before hand).

I've been cruel for several things over the years (rabbit skin tuggy which he adores.....putting a muzzle on him when he's a bite risk with strange dogs etc) but this was a new one by me.

I've been accused of cruelty for so many things - and amusingly what is cruel to one person, is exactly the right thing to do to another...

Having a dog that is always on lead in public (he's deaf) but there are many people that think all dogs should always be on lead all the time
Muzzling a dog - I like having functioning vets and in another case, there are only so many times a dog can survive blockages being surgically removed.
Letting my old JRT hunt rodents and rabbits - she was very efficient so no need for poison to be used. Better death and no wildlife damage.
Use of the word NO/Rude/Pack it in or a check on a collar while training. I have large, usually rescues with issues dogs. I train as positively as possible but will not wave a treat around while a dog is pushing boundaries. That reminds me of the next one!
Walking an adult dog on a collar or god forbid, a headcollar rather than a harness - really? what do you think my chances are of holding 50kgs+ of dog on a harness if it wants to go? Everything gets a headcollar until the training is in place for a half check...

I could go on :)

You have my deepest sympathy re a dog in a cone of shame. Will the bruises on my legs ever subside? We tried one of the donut ones but he can get around it, so, sorry mate, you rupture your cruciate, you have the consequence of the cone of shame and 8 weeks crate rest. And there's another one. How wicked am I keeping him on crate rest even though it is a strict instruction from vet, following his surgery?

My sympathies lie entirely with your legs, I know the damage those cones can do!
Yes, most dogs don't particularly like the cones, but better than the alternative of making a real mess of his leg. I hope he is soon back to full fitness, would be great to see you at some agility competitions.

We haven't found a trainer since S moved so it's all on hold at the moment, I can't imagine why no one wants my little darling ? but we are both missing it.

Where to start lol.

Kennel runs, crates, hand feeding, working them, not letting them all run together, keeping a single dog, having dog(s) and working full time, not letting them run around willy nilly to chase livestock and annoy other dogs/people, using anything other than a flat collar or harness and the power of my mind to control a reactive 40kg animal with high prey drive, not wanting to prolong a dog's life if it cannot get up and walk around or toilet itself unaided/without heavy long-term medication and interventions, keeping them trim/fit, not feeding them table scraps or 'treats', not rushing to greet them immediately I get home, especially if I am in bad form after work, not flinging a ball for them over and over until they are exhausted/broken/wired to the moon.

Currently looking at a ten and 12 year old who are both fit, agile and sound with no meds required, often mistaken for much younger dogs and can still do a turn in obedience or decoy training if required despite quite a heavy workload before retirement. And the younger one was bequeathed to me by the most fastidious person I've ever met, so I can't be that crap.

Currently working on wrecking a 2.5 year old who is noted for her sunny disposition, fantastic attitude and seal-like coat, despite having the misfortune of living with me.

I got called cruel by a woman at work for travelling my dog in a crate in the boot. Apparently I should continue to let her stare out the window and get wound up by all the stimulous, and not have a nice nap for herself in her cosy blankets.

Same woman travels her dog on her knee, I pointed out it would be cruel to allow my dog to become a missile in a crash, which wasn't appreciated.

Oh, sleeping in the van, there's another one....

I've seen where things end up in a relatively low speed crash, nah, not for me.

If you need a smile…I caught our little cob mare telling her 2yo daughter off today. Such irony…every time I tell MY daughter off in her presence, she gives me ‘the look’ that clearly accuses me of cruelty, and goes to nuzzle my kid (her usual rider) to tell her not to worry, she’ll protect her from her mean mother. So I was greatly amused to see her being a complete hypocrite today! ??

I got called a narcissist when I replied to one of those Facebook posts from a dog rescue that claimed thou must allow thy dog to sniff everything it pleases while on a walk. I think I'd replied with something along the lines of preferring my dogs to prioritise me when on a lead and sniffy time was limited to when the dogs were off-lead and wouldn't have to drag me to wherever the most interesting smell was.

Using a slip lead is apparantley cruel... as is sitting my spaniel up while I throw balls/dummies past him or over his head. Stopping him on the way out to a retrieve is cruel too as it's teasing?????!!!!!!! said by owner of pet dog who does noting but use a ball launcher for 10 minutes ...

I got told off again today, by the same woman (who's dog by the way is a fashionable mongrel who was bought on gumtree at the height of covid but that's by the by but if she's going to judge me I'm going to judge her) for giving my dog a deer leg. Apparently I'm going to give her a taste for blood and my snuggly family pet will turn into Cujo or something. Give me strength ?

I am a convert to the blow up cones , much nicer for them and me .
For some people cruel and unpleasant have the same meaning .
I’ve not found a blow up one that stays on if they are determined. Those soft ones like CT is using are good.
But sometimes the injury just means they have to wear a hard cone and deal with it. Sometimes life is like that.

Apparently I’m the worst owner in the world for asking my dog to sit, putting her food down and then making her wait until I tell her to take it. I’ve been told I’ll cause resource guarding issues with food. Same for (being in the process of) teaching her to take food I drop rather than repeatedly shouting leave as I try to beat her to whatever it is before she inhales it in typical labrador fashion.

Life is indeed like that, sometimes. But we have used the blow-up 'donuts' successfully with Labs and Rotts.

I do this with all my dogs. When my much missed Freya was a pup I put her food down, told her to wait then went to let the others out. I got distracted and it was more than 5 minutes when I remembered poor Freya, went back in the kitchen and she was sitting there, in a pool of drool, but still waiting bless her. I felt very bad.

Today the female kicked off in the van so I remarked 'there goes the Tiny Gobshite' (H/T Blackcob) and that set her father off, which prompted 'and you can zip it, Slightly Larger Gobshite'

I have been trying to think what this reminded me of and it's the Nac Mac Feegles. I can supply an Awfully Wee Gobshite, so now we just need Not-As-Big-As-Slightly-Larger-Gobshite-But-Bigger-Than-Tiny-Gobshite Gobshite. ?
