So... Im looking into getting another cavalier king charles spaniel as Harvey my sister's dog has moved out with her and its very lonely here now! I'm not fussed if the new bundle of fluff is male or female as I don't want to breed but mum is dead set on having a girl which is narrowing down the search a bit as they seem to get snapped up the fastest. So, which do you prefer and how can I persuade her that another boy isn't a bad idea? Temperament and good health are most important to me but it seems I'm alone in that way of thinking in my house :P

I dont seem to choose my own dogs they sort of choose me! sorry no help, just the two we have now are dogs!

I have 7 bitches. I have owned a couple of dogs in the past but I wouldn't have another dog. Only one of my bitches is a breeding bitch, the rest are all spayed. Bitches suit me perfectly as they are very loyal and always with me wherever I go on the farm. The couple of dogs I've had have been wanderers and not as reliable as my bitches. Mind you I am also a mare woman and my cats are all female. I definitely prefer female animals.

Is it really that difficult to find a female CKC spaniel?

I prefer dogs. We have 5 and only 1 is a bitch. My horses are both geldings too, I think I just prefer boys! Especially when they are neutered, all of ours are except the puppy, they seem to be more compliant.

I prefer bitches , not sure why really maybe its just the fact that I've had mainly bitches. I have only had 2 males, a chihuahua who guarded me against every perceived danger, and a GSD who was a big soft lump. :)
Obviously with a bitch if you are not planning on breeding the cost of spaying is more than castration , and it is a bigger op, but really I think it is all down to personal preference.

We've had a mixture over the years. Both are lovely.
Pros for bitches are they are slightly more clingy and want to be with you, don't stray as much but they are greedier and will eat anything, however disgusting!
Pros for dogs, less greedy, still loving, ours have always been slightly more playful. They have all wanted to wander though.

All of ours have been neuteured, male or female.

The rescue we use like to have a male and a female together if you're going to have two dogs.

Bitches all the time for me. I can't stand males cocking their legs against everything upright!!!
My bitches have all been loyal, loving and keen to work for me. JMHO

I can't make my mind up, Jack is amazing and would gaurd me against anyone, very loyal etc but does tend to wander more. The girls are much keener to be with me but much more into other people and stroppier.

I will never have two girls together after this though!

For a large breed I prefer a dog despite the leg cocking! They always seem easier and more people orientated (i'm talking about guarding/herding types rather than GPRs here)

I'll never have a terrier or small breed dog again, I much prefer the bitches...not such an attitude IME

If you are getting a CKCS then there is no difference in temperament between dogs & bitches, usually dogs are more loyal :) (so says my mother with 35+ years experience of breeding/showing CKCS) :)

I prefer dogs, male animals in general. I couldn't bear the mess of a bitch! My lot are madly affectionate, very clingy, I think it's how we've trained them.

If you're looking, present her with your choice, not hers.

My choices have been dictated by my existing dogs and what they would get along with so no 1 is a dominant bitch so 2 was a boy (gorgeous) and no 3 found me and got on with the others really well so she came home. All of mine are rescue staffords.

only ever had males - dogs and horses! My neutered flatcoat couldn't be clingier if he was a bitch, he has to be with us at all times, but at least he doesn't cock his leg up everything :). The entire one has always been independent, even as a puppy, but at 4 is now very affectionate and cuddly (but DOES cock his leg up everything!). I like other people's bitches well enough but just never wanted one (we had a female cat and she was more trouble than all the boys ;) )
