Then really my choices for this week were drown my sorrows in ice cream or acquire a new horse!

Last week a dealer friend messaged that she was getting in a wee mare that might suit me. She’s too young, too small and too scrawny to match my ‘ideal’ list. But there was something nice about her, and I started trying to persuade my husband that even though I said I wanted an older schoolmaster type, what I actually meant was I wanted an unbroken, half grown 3 yo!
I’ve come to an agreement with my friend that she comes here to graze for a few weeks, and we’ve settled on a figure if I do want her. The first pic is when she arrived at my friend’s yard a week ago, so the improvement has been massive already!

thanks! I’m not expecting her to be a world beater, but I’m hoping for a nice all rounder. she’s so unhandled she doesn’t know how to take food from your hand or that sugarbeet is edible, but she stood to get her front feet done by farrier and travelled nicely to mine. Hopefully she’s just a naturally chilled girl.
When I was considering her, Meowy Catkins and Conniegirl checked the pics to make sure I wasn’t buying a monster, so I’m alternating between blaming them for encouraging me, and telling my husband that by the time I’d have gone round the badminton trade stands, I’d have spent more than I am on her. ?

That grass will do her a world of good. Dr Green, as they used to say. I hope you will like her and that she will stay.

I think by the end of the summer she will look very nice good luck with her will look for update pictures.

First 24hours have gone well; very civil to catch and lead, but you can see when she’s eating her hard feed that she’s obviously got sharp teeth. Given that she was totally unhandled until a week ago and seems to manage grass okay, I’m not sure whether to get dentist out now, or work on her handling and trust for a couple of weeks first- any thoughts?
Husband is agreeable to keeping her- the theoretical schoolmaster was meant to be so he could ride it, but I think he might be relieved to be relegated to leading the girls on the pony that I’m now on the lookout for! She does have horses in the next field btw- just none suitable to in with her right now. She also needs a name! Any suggestions?

i think she is rather nice, how big is she likely to make?

does she have any known breeding or a passport name to give some ideas.

a few names biscuit, blondie, saffron, crunchie, honey, savannah

and i would get teeth done asap by a considerate dentist

I would try and get her teeth done asap. I need a filling but it's not extreme so dentist has asked me to wait till it gets in bearable or lock down is lifted. Its making me miserable. So I have a huge sympathy for a horse whom is eating all day. I need to diet and having yogurt and soup to avoid most eating probs but it's still sore.

She has a green book, but very unexciting breeding! Her passport name is Garryduff Well Dun. She’s out of a buckskin stallion called Woodstock Hero.
My two year old insists she’s called Toffee Pop as that’s the name of the pony she rides!

She’s beautiful! Congratulations ? I used to know a dun mare called Charm, which I still think is such a pretty name for such a pretty colour of horse!
Other ideas...
Poppy (if your little one is calling her Toffee Pop!)
Mouse
Daisy
Diva
Saskia
Twiglet/Twiggy
Birdie
Hippy (Woodstock related!)

I like Poppy- it can be a nod to the VE celebrations too!
the dog’s nickname is Mouse and one of my daughters is Daisy! ?

I’ve just taken a bit of an unexpected step forward in training. Looked out the window and the horse was on the wrong side of the electric fencing. Went out- couldn’t find the springy gate bit. Eventually found it pretending to be a snake stuck right through her tail! Called horsey neighbour for an extra pair of hands, but she didn’t answer, so just had to stick my hat on, tie her up where husband could see us and crack on. Did a bit of detangling, but ultimately erred on the side of caution and cut a chunk out of her already short tail! She was so good; nervous but stood nicely and let me work with this springy snake that had already attacked her. I’m really impressed with her attitude so far.

Just a wee Poppy update (sorry- Duffy was strongly vetoed in our house!) Over the weekend I decided to give her a try on the lunge. 15 mins later she was walking and trotting on both reins really nicely. So i popped a roller on her and she just stood and looked at me. She’s such an easy, nice horse to be around! I got her teeth done and she had a cap and a wolf tooth removed, and can now eat hard feed. She still doesn’t have a clue about eating anything out of your hand, just sniffs it until you put it on the ground for her!
So why am I having a wobble about buying her? I guess I have two young kids, and such limited time to do things with her. I’m also not that experienced with youngsters, although I plan to send her away for breaking and then have lots of help with training, so I guess I come under the ‘knows enough to know how little they know’ category! Im so torn! I’m not sure I’ll ever get anything with such a laid back attitude again, and might really regret letting her go. What should I do?

Keep her. She sounds lovely and looks very useful.
Or send her to me! But I’m a sucker for a nice young horse.
