A repro exam will be included in the PPE!!!!!

And I'm in no way thining bad of anyone with BOGOF foals this year. Not even in the slightest. Just that I've never heard of as many and not just on here. I also think part of the problem is people just not castrating as before. Not because they want stallions but because of expense.

It's highly unlikely I will buy any horse anytime soon and I have 4 mares anyway. They most definitely are not in foal.

I do feel for the owners of these mares. Having the extra responsibilty and cost you weren't expecting can't be fun. And they've all handled these issues brilliantly and maturely. The mares were lucky to land with good people. This means the best chance babies end up in a good home.

I would say I agree, however I've just bought a mare without a pregnancy test - though I know the farm where she came from keeps it's stallions away from the mares.

Personally I don't know why many people are excited if they get a BOGOF, personally I'd be horrified. I'd be exceptionally cross with the fact that I couldn't use my mare for the purpose she was bought for, for the months at the end of pregnancy and then until weaning; plus then the extra expense (vets, feed, livery) for the foal, then the hassle of weaning and then finding a buyer for a foal of unknown origins.

If we ever buy a mare again, shoot us?

Sorry, just had so much heartbreak over the last one who had to be PTS due to ovarian cysts- it was only because my mum and sister were so adamant that she was not just naughty that they checked her out. She was truly insanely talented and had so much to give. She was only just turned 6.

Geldings might be quieter and might not fight as hard for you (according to some... I reckon Reg would do anything to protect Al), but at least that won't happen.

Good point, it does seem to be a problem unless you're very aware of how and by whom, the mare has been kept.
Well done to those who've found themselves in this position, but it's something to take into consideration when buying a mare.

Sorry for the downer. It was a week ago, and the only choice Al could make for her- another operation with such a poor outcome was not fair on her. But she was so talented. She had a point to prove and would take on anything with a toss of her head and her game face on. It's not fair.

But I 100% agree- any mare I would want thoroughly checking. If nothing else, it would throw up indications of any issues like that.
