My youngster has taken to having the odd buck.
''Nothing wrong with the saddle,he's just trying it on.Get him out and tire him out''
Hmm well possibly.
The saddler is coming out to check the fit - bearing in mind this saddle was only fitted a couple of months back so he is unlikely to have changed that much.
Ok so I decided to hack him up the fields as recommended by YO, my friend came with me.
First few fields no problem trotting etc Decided to canter up the hill - plan being that he couldn't buck.First canter ok-ish Second well - what can I say?
First few strides ok then we decided to go left .I didn't want to go that way I wanted to go in a straight line. I was trying really hard to stop him napping but got to the part were I so unbalanced I flew out the side.I am so not used to falling off I had forgotton how much it hurts. My friend parted company with her horse as well after letting rip with a big buck. What a sorry sight we were lol
Then to add injury to insult we had to catch the horses which had disappeared .Mine had gone one way hers the other.Fortunately we were in a gated field.
I am now sporting some nice black bruises and have a very sore wrist .

That sounds painful.Hope you are okay it is never nice falling off is it..Have a nice hot bubbly bath might help with your aches and pains.

Fun ride then all in all.

I would get your saddle checked though, even though say its only a couple of months, you'd be suprised how much a youngster will change shape :)

what a shame you will be sore tomorrow....get some paracetamol down you and a hot bath :) and if it will make you feel better getting him back checked then you should do it. You may be right you know your horse better than anyone else :-) (but i would maybe lunge the little monster before you get on next time.....)xx

Your yard owner has it right - but in the wrong order!

Tire him out and THEN get on him - i.e. lunge the little poppet for 20 minutes in trot and canter - walk a big circle when doing it so you can keep HIM on the biggest circle possible less strain on young joints!)

THEN ride him IN THE SCHOOL! No open fields for him until he learns to behave and when you DO venture out, lunge him first! Apart from the risk to you, bucking and napping are bad news in one so young! Nip it in the bud now!

Absolutely what JG suggested. Riding time = work time, not play time. Until he gets this into his head, he'll just be wanting to have fun... and the more energy he sets off with, the more he'll have (and the less fun you'll have!)

Similar happened to me bucking bit , young horse my horse had a bad back and went lame !Had vet out it was little bucks one offs then got worse he was in pain, get him checked over sounds like my horse then all of a sudden went lame he bucked asking for canter

I would get saddle, back, teeth checked etc.

My mare went through a bucking stage had all the checks and she was fine and it was something that she had learnt to do.

However...

Most the youngsters I have ridden when they get to 5/6 year old they all seem to have a mad few months where they take to bucking.

Hope you find out whats wrong and hope you didn't hurt yourself falling off.

Get the saddle checked first, as someone else said youngsters can change shape quickly, and the saddle might also have changed a bit if it was brand new, through normal wear. You might as well eliminate the possibility as it is such a straightforward thing to do.

Always trust your own instincts OP. I've been in your situation where I've let others tell me what I should be doing - and in doing so nearly came a real cropper.
