My poor mare has just spent 3 weeks at the vets recovering from painful hamstrings - caused who knows how... anyway she came home this sunday with a strict re-hab plan. I was advised to lunge in an Equi Ami training aid. I dutifully paid ££ for this thing even though I am proficient at long lining and my horse has always gone better on the lines than in any 'training aid' - but the vet said so I did. So I tack up my mare and out we go to the arena in the dark (floodlight) in the rain. (vet mentioned keeping to the plan in all weathers). I warm up my mare and off we go. I fit the training aid - I think she goes so so in it. We get to the cantering bit (following instructions) mare does not want to canter and demo's her speed trot. I slow up try again - nothing - mare looks worried and upset. I loosen the training aid and try again - no better - more looks more worried and upset. I take off the whole frount half of the kit - worse again. I take off the whole kit and lunge just from bit ring - happy mare and a worried but passable canter. cool off back to stable. where in the stronger lights I can see the problem the rope which is meant to pass round her hind legs has rubbed a big raw patch/blister on each hind - just where they were sore and still shaved from the vets inferential treatment. Geee do I feel like a bitch. poor horse. ££ badly spent and now I can't even long line which we both like as the line would rub the sore spot. And my poor poor pony who just really needed to get better. i let her lick out our TB's feed bowl as a treat and rubbed soothing cream into the sore parts but I just wish I could say sorry!
