If you are bored at work.....

Just watching 1990 now.. HOW did Ian Stak's Charlie Brown bounce that massive oxer??!!

Quite glad that XC safety has been improved since then!! Nasty fall for Lisa Evans. In that situation I can totally understand the 'one fall and you're out' for internationals (maybe not 1 and 2* but def 4*!).

wait till you get to 1991 - a horse literally flipped into the water, scary stuff.

hated to watch lisa evan's fall - horse hasn't been competed since according to BE :( not a lot on her either, hope she was ok!

There are a LOT of scary mishaps, and some where I've been :o that they've just carried on....poor ponies! Shows how tough you had to be then. Some of those fences are just crazy - I know they were a bit smaller but bloomin heck!!

I'm now onto 1992...lol :D

I know!

I'm onto 1993 now... :D

New favourite horse : Jacana - chestnut with a cute strip, keep your eyes peeled. thou I just saw it get stuck over a bounce of huge parallells :( sad to see as it's really nice

Oh eventing of old - anyone wish it was still more like that than the current stuff?

Thanks for the link :D

I was just watching Pippa on Sir Barnaby pile into a ditch. It's amazing that she was able to get back on and carry on whilst the commentator speculated that she looked to have concussion!

It amazes me how riders were allowed to get back on and carry on even though they were obviously not entirely with it

Not a point two in sight

haha dd I thought that - and wan't AN so cute! He's aged VERY well ;) (and I'm not normally partial to a bit of AN!)

I watched 1990 & 1991 last night. Guess what I'll be doing every evening for the next few weeks ;)

A few observations over and above those already mentioned;

- many of the fences were seriously scary (I've attended Burghley for years and the gradual change over that time is just amazing)

- many of the fences are so elaborate - real head scratchers as to which route to take, which just doesn't happen to the same degree nowadays - although I guess the cost of reproducing those types of fences would be astronomical

- there really was the opportunity for more 'amateur' riders to get to 4*, although many did flap & kick their way round!

- the standard of riding these days is just so much more polished (setting the obvious Mark Todds, Andrew Nicholsons, Blythe Taits, etc, aside! :p)

- and just to reiterate - the fact that riders were allowed to remount and continue after crashing falls, where they were very clearly dazed / concussed / injured, etc. I know we all moan about the 1 fall and you're out rule but watching some of those, I would have to admit it's really not a bad thing as it takes away any element of doubt!

See I was looking at the fences and thinking actually they would be breezed around now and was similar to 3* level. For instance in 1990 hardly any of them took the short route over the arrow head but instead pulled their horses round and wasted a few seconds to come over the arm. Also they were all going on about the Remy Martin S but that question comes up regularly now. The other thing that interested me is we go on about horses being twisted and turned and actually a lot of the fences did the same then as many did not take direct routes. Its just the direct routes did not twist and turn and instead seemed to be bold.
The horses really interested me as I think the horses on the whole now are a lot classier. The showjumping has massively improved in technicality.

I agree with that, but the horse I mentioned earlier, the Jacana (?) was sooo nice, and there were a few others I thought were lovely, although on the whole I agree.

I've just mostly been watching the XC - but they did seem to gallop the SJ!!! (and it seemed smaller?)

Hate seeing the twisty routes taken.

You can see why eventers had a reputation from sjers about not being able to Sj! Its just a slightly slower form of xc in the 1990s!

haha some horses just have a mind of their own!! Thought Tina on General Jock was awesome - remember having a poster of them on my wardrobe manier years ago! :)

Am definitely most bored in work. Am back after a days out with Mini TX eventing yesterday (report to follow later on), the sun is shining, I want to be out with the horses! I can see me sitting and closing my office door and enjoying ......... when I should be writing training reports .......

Have to admit though, I do agree with the ruling now of one fall and you are eliminated. Some of those riders look really dazed and confused, and it does avoid any absence of doubt as to their fitness to complete. Also, the BPs dont look very substantial either, and the modern ones and also Point Twos can only be seen as a positive change. Have to say quite fancy a trip up to Burghley next month after this.

Crikey there are some awful falls - I'm watching 1991. Some people look so amateur! My heart was in my mouth watching Caroline Ryan-Bell! She's sooo tiny!
