Hi guys,

I just thought I would warn everybody who is looking at trailers to buy. I have been let down too many times now whilst looking for Ifor William 505 or 510. First I sent a cheque as deposit to the seller who agreed a price with me and as the trailer was 4hrs journey away I was going to collect it at weekend. I wanted to insure it so I asked for the chassis number and suddenly the seller text me few hours later saying her hubby sold the trailer to someone else. Luckily I was able to cancel the cheque. This was via preloved.

Second time, much more serious incident, was via ebay just yesterday. I was bidding on a lovely trailer but missed out on it last minute. The next thing was I had an email from the seller ( we were corresponding prior to the auction end as I wanted to find out few more details) telling me that the bidder did not come through with the money as they could not secure a loan and that he would accept certain amount for a quick sale. I was getting really excited, especially as he came across very sincere and helpful and said the transaction had to go via Ebay to protect both of us. He asked for my full name and delivery address (the trailer was in Aberdeen and he said he was working away, but happy to arrange the delivery at cost) and advised he would sort it out with ebay and ebay would send me their invoice marked as ebay motors. In minutes I indeed received such email with account details to transfer money to, very believable and it even had live chat window help, which I used to verify there was an ebay motor account that would hold the money in their escrow account till I was happy with the trailer that it is not faulty or stolen and only after the 14 days the money would be released to the seller. All seemed very fair and above board. The chat person, was also very reassuring when I questioned why the account was actually in some russian name and based in Leicester, only to be told it was set up by ebay as the third party account and not to worry because that is how ebay motors is set up.
I still was not happy, so asked the seller which company was he using for the shipping. He did not answer and when I asked for the chassis number he kept saying he would give it to me the next day but he would like to start the shipping and therefore would supply after the money transfer. I was not happy, so I actually contacted ebay from their own website and not via any links from the seller's invoice, and very quickly discovered that the whole thing was fraud and that the winning bidder also reported it as fraud. I know we all want a bargain but it is rather shocking how easily this person would be able to draw money out from other bidders (there were at least 10 on this particular trailer)!!!

The other thing I find shocking is that people actually have no fear of selling either non existent items or stolen ones on Ebay freely. The amount of times when I ask for more details, especially about datatag paperwork and more importantly chassis number as my insurance will not insure without it, I rarely receive an answer! I am also very disappointed with Ebay as I was very quick to report the fraud and provided them with all the evidence, yet they did not take any action as I still received an email from the fraudster asking if I could make the transfer today!!! So much so, I actually emailed Ebay and told them that as they obviously cannot be bothered to report the fraud to appropriate police department, they are basically harbouring criminals and breaching the law by knowingly not taking any action. No wonder these disgusting individuals have the last laugh.

In case some people suggest to buy second hand from a dealer...no thank you...simply because I viewed few that were well overpriced for the condition they were in. Couple of my friends bought and sold trailers over the years privately and had much better deal and I am not talking just hundred or two pounds difference either. I just hope I will be lucky enough to come across some decent people soon just like many others have done and get a fair deal.

I am hoping to be lucky third time, this time a friend of mine emailed me few hours ago saying a livery may be selling her trailer in next few weeks, so fingers crossed this time I may be lucky!

That is a worrying story - good job you are on the ball, but I bet they have made quite a bit of money from that scam.

Regarding your comment about buying from a dealer. Yes, they are more expensive, but you get a guaranty; they have been serviced and are therefore a) genuine and b) safe.

I hope you find one from somebody you know or via a pony club/riding club website where they are often up for sale especially when little ones are off to uni.

This sort of fraud is very common though it's the first time I've heard it being used for a horse trailer. Really well done for spotting it. You can usually spot these sort of cons as they ask you to use an email address they include in the advert, have very little history and no other contact details. They always offer delivery and will never let you view, so as a test this is a good question to ask. If anything ever makes you remotely suspicious, walk away.

On a more positive note, I bought my trailer off Ebay. I went to pick it up but one of the tyres was flat. The seller was beside himself with embarrassment and had 5 new top brand tyres fitted (he did the spare too) at his own expense and then delivered the trailer to me. Have faith, cause there are some really nice people selling genuine stuff on-line. Unfortunately, there are many who would rather fleece people than put in an honest days work!

I know somebody else this has happened to about a year ago, exactly the same thing happened to her only she was more trusting than you thinking scams like this didn't happen using Paypal.

She lost £3,500 and to say she was gutted is an understatement! There was nothing anybody could do the scammer was using a false email address, paypal account the lot.

I am so glad you didn't get caught out.....but nearly thought

Try Barlows Trailers in lancashire, they've been in the trade for years and have a high turnover so will get trade ins all the time
They've got a 505 for sale, and when we collected our 511 there was a 510 in the car park a week ago.
Good luck in your quest... It's awful there's sommuch dishonesty out there these days - can't trust anymore

This happend to me' last Friday one came on starting at £1200 for a classic 510. I emailed for a buy it now price and they said they'd take £1800 and deliver I was also very excited!!! So he said send me' your del address and I'll send across the invoice to pay through paypal! I did then heard nothing of it!! They now have my name and address! I'm worried I'll now be a target of ID

Really not worth the risk, if seller won't allow you to view or give you chassis number - walkaway.

There are loads of 505's and some 510s about and prices are falling for them privately.
Expect to pay less than £1300 for a pre 1998 505 and £2000 for a 510 same age. They will need a new floor/ panels/ tyres/ brakes at that age so don't pay over the odds. That is why the dealers are so expensive, replacing all these costs over £1000 to the cost of the trailer.

Expect about £2200 for a 505 2003-05 give or take, and £2800 for 510 similar age.
Often folk have no idea how old their trailer is and they are chancing their arm on price, trying to get what they paid for them 5 years previous. Check with Ifor if stolen and buy local wherever you can.
Prices have softened here in Scotland and I see the same ifor trailers advertized at a cheaper price as the weeks pass.

Thank u all. And sorry to hear some of u didn't have a lucky escape like me. I will try to find one through word of mouth, friends etc. if any of u know of a nice trailer that needs good home please pm me. I just hope I made a difference alerting as many people as possible albeit probably tiny drop in a big sea. I will certainly follow up with eBay and give them hard time and hopefully achieve better protection for honest people.

am sure not everyone is out to make money??? but some people are unscrupulous!!! am about to sell my 2006 505 so hope as a seller i have no problems!!

I think I've just had a narrow escape too...
I saw this advert this afternoon and e.mailed the seller (as per the advert) to ask for some clearer, less fuzzy pictures. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Franke-2-...t=UK_Horse_Wear_Equipment&hash=item3cc8be3e0d

13 people have bid and the auction ends in 5 hours! I suspect that the e.mail address has been added without the seller and genuine owner of the horsebox being able to see it on the advert.

This is the reply I've just received from 'Henry Johnson' e.mail tartde52@gmail.com (not the address in bold at the bottom of the advert! although this is the e.mail I sent it to)
Hi,

Thank's for the email. The horse trailer it's is in pristine condition, no rust, no problems here, all documents available. I don't have a fix price but if u are agree with £1500 including delivery to your address I will be happy to sell it. I check the other horse trailers and I think is a fair price. I'm located in Aberdeen. Because of that i chose to handle the sale online through eBay. I will get somebody to bring it to you if you decide to buy it but we have to close the deal through eBay, inspection period prior buying it along with a refund policy will be included in the sale terms. You have max 14 days for inspection and refund the horse trailer. If u decide to refund the horse trailer you will not lose anything. If you are agree please e-mail me your shipping details ( your name, address, phone no. ) and eBay user id so I can open a transaction case with eBay and declare you as buyer.

Also, I need to know if you have cash in hand because I have a lot buyers interested in the purchase and I don't have time to waste. No offense but if you really want to buy the horse trailer I will stop communicating with the other interested buyers.
Thank you !

I attached some pictures, for any question e-mail me anytime!

Dodgy or what?

IT IS THE SAME PERSON! EXACTLY WHAT HE WRITTEN TO ME! AND EBAY IS DOING NOTHING ABOUT IT! DISGUSTING. I NOTICED OTHER SELLERS THAT I BET ARE HIM AS WELL. CRIMINALS.

I e.mailed the genuine seller (who ignored me!) as I was so concerned and also e.bay, who also ignored me.
Tinkam, I am soooooo grateful that you posted as I would have been tempted to buy it for £1500. Until I read your post I had no idea that scammers could add their own details to adverts like that, it's clever though, giving an e.mail to contact prominently in the advert so that you don't click the official 'contact seller' and alert them. I would have smelt a rat from the sellers poor English but paying through e.bay and Paypal does make you think it must be genuine.
hardly seems worth scamming for £1500 though...

The problem with wanting a bargain is that it puts you at risk from scammers. It sounds like the people posting here have good common sense - but there are a lot of people out there who are greedy and stupid and they are the frausters best friend.

No problem. I do not want anybody to go through that experience. ANYBODY that should come across any fraud online or otherwise PLEASE REPORT IT - please see the link below.

http://www.met.police.uk/fraudalert/reporting_fraud.htm

I have contacted national media and asking them to make a full spread on eBay as well. This must be stopped or at least limit the "damage".

I am sorry, but you must be a very naive person if you would consider sending someone you don't know a cheque for a trailer you haven't even viewed, or to consider getting involed in the ebay scam. What planet are you living on ?

There are plenty of second hand trailers available. And the best place to buy from is a dealer, you will know the trailer is sound and not stolen, becase they should have checked the stolen trailer register.

Some people on here can be so horrible!
Sometimes you get caught in a whirlwind and only when you sit back and asses a situation is when it becomes clear that you are being scammed!
But I guess some people have never been stupid or caught out have they?! Hiding behind a user ID is easy hey!

Wow scary. They seem to be very clever how they do these scams. I would not know where to start and I would be no good at it as Im too honest for my own good!

Now, if something seems too good to be true, I walk away.

I think the moral of the story is "theres no such thing as a free lunch", reputable dealer or local private seller where you can check out much more throughly,is the only way to go with high value items, it would seem to me.

I had a similar experience through ebay.

I contacted through ebay to ask for contact details as I wanted to view the trailer. I was provided with an email to recieve further pictures, but I would not be provided with a phone number or location of the trailer. They offered free delivery (why would someone offer this before I had even told them my address?!), but still wouldn't give a phone number or location. I stopped contact then as obviously was a scam, but I couldn't report to ebay as had no proof! Don't think it's the same person though as this person wrote in good English.

It's horrible to think there's so many people out there looking to scam people. I've been lucky and always bought trailers through friends (same can be said for buying my horses too!), and it's put me off buying one from a private seller. I think I'd prefer to buy from a dealer and know I'm getting a safe trailer.

I bought mine off a private seller Not through eBay and I got a great trailer for a good price. And they were lovely people who were as honest as the is long. Unfortunately it's the wicked minority that ruin it for genuine people. I think you do what is right for you and I have to be honest the last thing I thought would be about was scams on horse trailers!!! Crazy! Thank you to OP for alerting everyone to it and highlighting the fact they are about!!!

Big Red, how lovely!

The trailer is not a 'bargain' as such, being at the lower end of average price rather than 'cheap' adds to its legitamacy.
The main reason I looked at it is because there is little choice in this area. The ebay advert showed the location as being 40 miles from me. Had I bid on it I would have collected it- hence looking at local adverts on ebay as te advert doesn't say anything about couriering. One of the issues is that the scammer then reples that he is actually at the other end of the country working but can courier the trailer to the buyer. There is no queston of sending a cheque (where did that come from?), payment is requested through paypal via ebay (which in theory is legitimate as Paypal guarantee their payments). Only when the buyer pays, the scammer withdraws their money, and Papal don't refund (as scammer has withdrawn funds and is outside UK despite his profile and 'address') does it become clear that the Paypal guarantee is worthless.
Think I'll stick with the board in my local feed merchant!

beg your pardon? How dare you!
It is easy to criticise/insult people if you have not been caught up in the same scenario. If you read my thread properly you would realize we are not talking about some "chancer" trying his luck, but a proper fraud gang that uses sophisticated methods to fool people out of money. Yes, of course normally I would go and view a trailer, but as there are not any nearby and have not been in my price range, one has to look further afield. There was no risk involved as there was that so called 14 day money back guarantee via eBay Motors if the trailer was not satisfactory (which of course is not true). And some dealers do offer delivery service as well, so it is not like it was totally unusual either. I cannot be that naive or stupid as you instigating if I triple checked everything and found out it was fraud.

Of course it would be nice to go and get a new or an overpriced second hand trailer from a dealer, but some of us do not have the extra cash to pay over the top when private sales are much cheaper. Most of my friends bought second hand due to their restricted budget and without any hassle, so there are decent people that are good to deal with. Separating the good from the scum is a different story.

I suggest if you have nothing else but spit out nastiness, do not bother replying.

In the opning post , first paragraph, she says she sent a deposit cheque but was able to cancel it.

I am not spitting anything. I am stating a simple fact. Sending a cheque to someone you don't know, for a trailer you have never seen is a very foolishand naive thing to do.

I would not risk buying expensive items on ebay either, certainly not paying up front. If it is an expensve item like a trailer I might bid on it, but there is no way I would hand over the money until I had actually seen it and inspected it.
