If you are injured, what do you do?

What do you do money wise?

Was looking into taking out Income Protection Insurance, as my sick pay at work has run out, but it is sooo expensive that I would be better putting the money aside for a rainy day.

Do you have insurance that covers you if you are injured and cannot work? If so, what sort?

Also what do you do with your horses? Do you have an emergency horse sitter to look after them whilst you are laid up?

Just wondering as it's always a worry for me if I get badly injured again. Mum looked after horsey before but don't know if she would again or not.

I'm currently trying to build up a 'reserve' fund for this reason (bit more important now I'm the only one earning

)

I'm fortunate in as much as my work pays full pay when you are off for up to 26 weeks so in that sense I'm not so badly off.

My horses are in livery so they would just continue as normal - small child can ride her pony and my mare is currently off work injured but there is a rider at the yard for her if we need it.

Im insured with combined. They cover you for health and or accident. I have both as im self imployed, my OH just has accident in case he smashes him self Motocross racing, but is employed so cant justify it for sickness.
The accident cover is for any injury doing anything, it will also cover you for not being able to do your job properly even though you are at work, so if you do your back you have the pay for initial time off, then payment if you go back to work but are not able to do all your duties.
They can try to pop in and sell you new policies or renew the one you have - there is no need they are just trying to get their monies for selling policies- I just tell them ''I'll just check with customer services'' they soon go

also I see sales people at events which annoys me, the company its self is ace, but some of their sales men are rubbish

It would be a big problem for me if I smashed my self and didnt have the insurance as I would need it to pay people to do my job!!

I have an income protection policy. It's an 'own occupation' one so quite expensive, but it will pay out 3/4 of my salary until I reach retirement age if I am unable to work as a vet (even if I could work in an office or supermarket instead). For me it is quite important as I work for a small business who simply cannot afford sick pay on a long term basis.

I also have a critical illness policy, which pays out a lump sum if you are suffering from certain conditions (I forget what now!).

When I hurt my arm a friend helped me out with the horse. It helps that he is low maintenance and can quite happily live out 24/7 with no shoes etc should the need ever arise.
