The Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000 introduced a deadline of 2026 for
the addition of unrecorded rights to the definitive map and resources were
allocated to achieve the work.

Following withdrawal of those resources, the Ramblers’ Association have put
a petition on the No.10 web site calling for repeal of the 2026 cut-off
date. Please go to http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/repeal2026/ for more
information and to add your name if you support the call.

What this is all about is the 'Lost Ways Project'

There are estimated to be 1000's of miles of bridleways and byways that have been lost and the 'Lost Ways Project' is a project to find them, research them and have them put on the local authorities definitive map so that they are there for present and future generations of horse riders and drivers to use for ever more.

Many bridleways and byways where lost or recorded as public footpaths rather than bridleways or byeways in the 1950's when all parish councils where obliged to record them on their Counties definitive map. (The map held by the County Council which has all public rights of ways listed on them).

The government promised to put resources and funding towards this on condition that any that had not been researched and claimed after 2026 could no longer be claimed.

This sounds a long period of time but believe me that each bridleway takes many man hour of research to prove it existed. The process for each one involves determining the precise route and then researching them at the County Hall Archive and the Tax Office at Greenwich together with finding people that may have used them.

However the government never came up with any resources and funding and have now said that any intended funding has now been withdrawn.

We believe that it is only fair that the 2026 year deadline is removed because without any funding the existing volunteer researchers will not be able to do all the research work.

Please support us by signing this petition because for those of you that hack out it is of future benefit to you to sign this petition.

The BHS do courses on how to do the research work so if you are interested contact your local BHS access officer who will be pleased to asssist you.
