If you had a plot of land at the back of your home..

Nope, because I'd prefer not to keep my horses at home - I like to be on a yard.

Unless it was absolutely massive and I was rolling in dosh and I could open a proper professional yard!

We did this - about 25 yrs ago. We started off with 2 stables, expanded to 4, and then built a hay barn, tack room, small hay shed (next to stables) rug room, and tractor shed!! :)

The stables are about 5m from my bedroom window :)

Yes - there are things that could be better, maintaining the field is ongoing, I would LOVE a surface to ride on, but basically it's great. I can see advantages of being on a yard, but I think on the whole I'd rather be as I am.

As to running as a business - no way. I wouldn't want people round the house and stables everyday. You have to go through our garden to get to our field, so wouldn't be an option for us. Plus we just have land enough for the horses I keep :)

If I could buy the land (36acres) behind our house I would in a shot but to keep it as farm land and horses to stay were they were. Why because I would like the land to stay farm land and not be built on. Horses are in far better place on the yard and I have back up when I go away or if I am ill. I would get 2-3 acres (de registered as farmland) and added to the plot of the house so house sat in nicer sized plot for it's size.

We did.

We have 16 acres and built 6 stables. There were already 3 pony stables. Initially we had our two own, then got three DIYs and two more of our own. For us, we found it harder work to have DIYs and we like the privacy of our own place, so don't do it anymore.

Very hard to make money from horses too...

I'd love a plot of land behind my house, but I'd want about 8 acres for 3 or 4 big 'uns just for me. I wouldn't want anybody else there.

Already done it. Now have two proper stables, a pony stable, tackroom and a small turnout pen. If there was more space we'd have done an arena instead of turnout pen, but it works well for me! I wouldn't want anyone else there though, I'm antisocial :)

Yes I have and now have an arena as well which is great, but one of the conditions of planning was that it was for private use - so I dont have liveries or let anybody use the arena as I wouldn't be insured. The one downside is it can be a bit lonely sometimes ( ive been on some great yards) but there are far more positives than negatives.

We did it too. Have a large garden and initially built 2 stables, then added a pony stable, haybarn, feed shed and then another stable/ field shelter in the field. i like doing my own thing and only have enough grass for mine plus the access is through the garden. Dont think i would like a big set up even if i could. My only wish would be an arena.

We've got 6 acres and have my two horses at home. They live out but we have applied for planning permission for stables and an arena so hoping to get started this year. I'm not sure we would want liveries and definitely not want to run it as a business. I would like company at times but not the responsibility of caring for someone else's horses if they can't make it down.

I have five stables and a couple of turnout areas at home. I would not ever rent to others! Firstly I don't want the hassle, secondly I don't want the business rates. I did let a friend keep her pony here for six months and that was a great time for all of us, I'd have her back again like a shot if she was desperate for somewhere to keep her ponies short term. However the loaner I had for my child's pony was an absolute nightmare and made me feel unwelcome in my own yard and i never want to go through that again.

we do but sadly its not ours and most likely never to be...owned by the parish council..i would take my fence down and build 2 stables & keep my horse and a littley with him......not big enough to have a lunge area i dont think but i can dream of being able to look out my window and see him. i ride around it sometimes pretending its mine haha!

I do but I just want room for me lol. I would like to put a school in at some point and I would like to find a rider for my second horse that I liked so I'd have some company.

I have my horses at home, I am renting a house that came with 7 acres, big shed that has 4 stables, kennels, huge space in shed for hay/straw, tackroom thats as secure as you could get, and a lunge arena. Wish I had a full arena though, as really have to box up to ride properly. Daughter rides pony in the field, but local riding school is only 5 mins in the jeep & box. I can understand why people wouldnt want it though, I do love the buzz from the yard, geting to meet other horsey people, etc..... But before I moved here, I was driving 40 miles a day to do the horses, so getting out of bed and being able to feed them in my PJ's is a dream come true!!!

I have my horses at home. I couldn't ever imagine having to go back to a livery yard now, i would hate it. I wouldn't have any liveries on with mine as i like to be able to just think about ny own horses and what they need and not what someone elses horses need. I have company on a Saturday when i have a young lass(coming up 15) comes to ride one of my horses and i also have my daughter to ride with.

I'd love to have my horse at home if I had land although would depend on:

Size of plot
Whether I could get planning permission for stables and school
Whether I could afford it :D

This is what you get...... View from the end of the garden last night. Not quite the same tonight, with driving rain and horses bum to the wind and rugged up!!

I grew up with my horses at home, we had 14acres attached to our house, it was wonderful, it was in the middle of nowhere in Wales. I would love to keep my girl at home on my own land, I would of course then have to buy a second to keep her company :D
Not sure I could ever afford it mind

It would depend totally on how much land I had. I've just bought a house with land at the back with a concrete pad which used to have stables on it (darn seller took them down!). We intend to put stables back up, but I'm only doing it according to how many horses I could have on the land (which is only 2.5 acres). So I plan to have a block of 3 (large as I hate small!) stables built as I would only ever expect to have 2 horses on that size of land and perhaps a 3rd occassionally in the summer (I sometimes do summer projects) and during the winter the 3rd stable can be used as a hay store. I'd love to be able to have a yard where I could offer small livery but I'd want the land to back it up - I know down south a lot of yards have barely any turnout but up here I think its expected to have all year round turnout (and its something I much prefer). Having kept my horses at home with my mum up until now, I would hate a busy yard environment but I would love to have people to ride out with as it can be quite dull on my own and a pain if I've got a youngster.
