If you have a Christ Lammfelle or other more ‘secure’ bareback pad

How secure is it really?

Son and cheeky Welsh would like to know!

Also, is there any way to keep them dry when it rains? A cover you can buy or….?

Welshy has lost weight at the back end of winter and I am not of the mind to go hunting for another saddle when he’ll put it back on in the spring. So…bareback it is!

Love mine too. I don't know if they're all the same but mine has thigh rolls which stop me falling out over a little hump or a spook or a dead stop - never been tested on anything more serious thankfully. The sheepskin means it's pretty grippy too.

I never thought about getting a cover to keep it dry - I'd be interested to find out, although I would have thought any kind of waterproof cover would be a lot slippier.

I've had a,Christ Lammfelle for very many years. Rode my 14.2hh opinionated spooky, no brakes ex-working Arabian stallion in it. Then my rather exuberant ex-racing Arabian 15hh gelding. After the loss of both of them due to old age, I bought a young Fell x ?Welsh 14.1hh mare, who was, (unknown to me) in foal. She was a lovely ride, very green, few brakes and jumped like a stag. Before she foaled down, I bought another Arab gelding, 22, a neglect case, and when he'd built up a bit, started riding him in the C L. He was also very keen on jumping, swerving and keeping going as fast as possible!
I rode all these in the Christ Lammfelle, in all weather's, up hill and down dale, roads, tracks, fields, marshes, woods and villages. I jumped in it, did gymkhana games and was often grateful that it has a webbing grab handle on the pommel!
I put the saddle in the washing machine in a big cotton wash bag, on a wool wash, having given it a good comb through with a pin rake. Natural drying or over a very low heat oil radiator. They're supremely comfortable and I would never want to use anything else.

I have used one on several different horses and tbh once I got used to using my body correctly I found mine extremely secure; happily riding a very sporty and excitable Arab x and doing a lot of the backing and riding away on my Welsh D mare who was initially hard to fit. Super comfy and you can feel everything the horse does. I did little (unplanned lol) jumps in mine and never felt insecure. I think they are fantastic. I use a WH saddle and a GP saddle generally now but the Lamfelle always feels like a bit of a treat to ride in. I sometimes question why I don't just ride in that actually...

I backed my sassy Arab x Appaloosa in mine. Very comfy and secure. Sadly looking like I won't be riding again though due to illness (me) and field injury (horse), so it's up for sale (not a promotion!), as it's a fab bit of kit I'd rather it be used than sat gathering dust in the tack locker.

more questions, if I may -
they take stirrups, I think (?), so does it slip to one side if you put weight in one stirrup, and can you use the stirrup to get on or does it end up under horse's tummy?
What size is yours Coblet?

Mine is the full size. I used the half tree and an extra shimmed pad underneath if I was using stirrups, but I only really had them on so I was legal for riding out! I never had a problem with it slipping round on those one or two moments where it looked like we would part company due to abrupt direction changes and my weight would inadvertently be thrown to one side

I don’t use the stirrups. They say in the website not to put your weight through them so thought it safer just not to have them.
Agree, although they were put on as decoration to not invalidate my insurance if our first hack.out didn't go to plan!

Funny, mine is an Arab too - is it because Arabs are notoriously difficult to fit saddles to, or because they're really comfy to ride in a CL?

I forgot to mention that my horse actually goes better in the pad than he does in any saddle. I don't have stirrups on mine.

Which versions of it do people have? Do the blocks in front help much? We mostly have spinning, sideways shooting and just good old youngster ‘nope not today’ (learning to leave the ride to canter away and back wasn’t pony’s finest moment!). Son would like a little more support if it can be found. He’s quite happy in walk and trot at home just with nothing, but canter and going out (off-road) can be a bit more ‘fun’!

I have the premium plus. To be honest, I sold the half tree and didn't bother with stirrups and two rides with them, they felt surplus to requirements. The thigh rolls helped with feeling secure

I've got one and despite the fact I've not ridden for many years I felt really secure in it, due to me and the pony both being out of shape and rusty we haven't tested it at anything strenuous yet but there's been no slipping at all with what we have done!

Could anyone give me any tips for mounting? At the moment I'm parking the pony next to a gate and climbing up the gate and just stepping over him, which is fine when he stands still and we're at home with things I can climb on but if we venture out in the trailer my little mounting block isn't high enough to step over him so I end up throwing myself at my poor pony and wriggling around to get on, which is not very dignified, turns out I'm not as agile as I was when I last rode a horse. If I attached the stirrups could I use them to quickly hop on from my little mounting block without damaging my pony or ending up hanging under his belly?

I have the stirrups to park my very long legs and big feet in. I use them as mounting aids and to assist in staying central and on board when Old Horse does one of his high drama spooks.
I've had no concerns about the pad slipping. I use a synthetic dressage girth with a sheepskin girth cover.
The knee rolls and slightly raised pommel and cantle add to my feeling of security. No shims or numnah used.

Re: mounting. I park Old Horse next to the mounting block and use the offside stirrup to get on, if in the school. If mounting elsewhere, I slide straight on from a convenient gate/wall/rock. I put hardly any weight in the stirrup and get on as quickly and smoothly as possible.

This is a very well timed thread!
I've been dithering between getting the CL Premium Plus and the Cloud- I know a few on here have the PP and really like them, but was wondering if anyone has the Cloud version and if it's worth the extra money? It looks like it might be a bit more secure than the PP and was leaning towards that one as my boy can have quite an impressive sideways spook/teleportation in him when he wants to

In my opinion, I think the Premium Plus is definitely worth the money.
