i dropped my horse off at his new yard the other day, he is being schooled so will not see him for a while :( .. after racking my brains over everything i should take with him, a grooming kit never occured... im a one horse girl.. :D, so have a pile of brushes..not cleaned to often, use my brushes on my 1 horse... get my jist.

the yard owner wasnt happy at all to put it politely and said can you go home and get it  .. or offered to buy a new one when he next went shopping.

sooo.. do you think this is being OTT & obsessive - or perfectly normal thank-you-very-much!
and why do you use different ones on each horse.. i am unbiased.. been to yards with both veiws.. just interested!

I have 2 horses and they share the 'everyday' grooming kit, but have some special brushes in the lorry for the horse that I show.

I am not sure if I would be happy to share my grooming kit with unknown horses as you do not know if they have any skin conditions, and then there is always the problem if brushes go missing/get broken and who is responsible to replace. May be this is where the YO was coming from?

I have 5 horses and each one has their own kit bags and each one is colour coded so i know how's is how's brushes. Maybe if i only had 2 horses i would share, but as i have 5 i don't like using 1 brush on all off them.

Ours have their own kits at home - kept in their stable, and I HATE when someone else mixes things up!! Our Sunday groom used to do that, and I'd come to groom my shiny bay for an event, and find hairs from the greys all over her!

We have a show grooming kit that lives in trailer, and it has a couple of brushes for the bay/chestnut, and a couple for the grey and skewbald.

Imagine how you'd feel if there was a horse that had arrived at the yard, and turned out to have ringworm or something and they'd used the same grooming kit on your horse...

All have their own, don't share as they all have completely different coats and are drastically different colours so it really shows if they share - LOL

Also have particular brushes for my mare as she has very delicate skin so can't use the stiff brushes that the boys can tolerate.

Its fine to share brushes between 1, 2 or 3 horses for everyday use but for showing you really have to use seperate brushes!
Basically you dont want horses to share any unwanted skin conditions or unmatched colours.

Bug has her own kit and the other three share one.

Don't mind my horses sharing as they share a field, but i'd not want any other horses brushes on my horse. Really fussy about it.

Bug has her own and don't like to use the others kit on her.

Stops any infection etc....

If i was sending my horse away to a yard i'd insist they only used her brushes on her, and didn't use her brushes on anything else.

Ours each have their own kit. If one starts to develop a skin problem it would be through the yard like wildfire if they shared brushes. Would you share your hair brush / tooth brush?

If we have a horse in for schooling it's in isolation for a week so certainly wouldn't be using shared brushes! At a yard OH worked at years ago, one of the new horses brought ringworm in, they didn't have isolation facilities and so the whole line got it.

I have two as my mare was grey, and my gelding black. I used to sometimes share brushes, but since she died, I haven't and wont ever use her brushes on another horse.

I have 4 horses and 4 grooming kits.

It just slows down the spread of any infections, lice, etc. You wouldn't expect 4 kids to share one hair brush at the end of the day, so whats different?

Its always the white hairs that show on the brown - never the other way around. That always amuses me on the skewbald!

I have 2 who each have their own kit. I think it stops any infections spreading, but also because they each have their own colour coordinated things!

I think it is normal to have a grooming kit per horse, I might share my brushes between the 2 but all three have their own brushes. I think it's important to each have their own especially if they are going to a new yard with new horses ! We wouldn't share hair brush with strangers.

Mine each have their own grooming kit - because I wash their brushes after each use. No good trying to get the horse clean with a dirty brush.

I also have a seperate one that goes to shows where they do share the kit. This also gets washed after use.

Serenity has Burgandy coloured brushes, Fantasia has Green and Serenade has Blue. Each has their own pure bristle body brush.

I only have 2 and they both have their own grooming kit. Purely because (as others have said) if one develops a skin problem it wont get passed on (hopefully!!)

My horses each have their own colour co-ordinated grooming kit BUT I now use just the same couple of brushes on all of them.

I'm not bothered by the skin disease argument as my horses are kept at home, all in the same field so if one got a skin complaint it would be easily passed from them being in contact with each other.

my 3 each have seperate grooming kits cos one is white and shed so much hair so it would get all over the other 2 if i used the same. and the thoroughbred is allergic to like everything so its better to keep her stuff seperate.
