before it becomes 4,5, 6, 20 ?

Only ever had 2 horses at once, and said no more, now we have a 3rd

Now a 4th no longer seems a bad idea, Ive either taken the wrong pills or something happens to the brain?

I notice people tend to start collecting after 3 ponies, any thoughts?

My mum and I got Mollie with the intention of sharing her, which lasted a while, I then decided to get my own and mum have Mollie and then I decided to get a youngster.
Didn't happen exactly like that, things happened inbetween but long story short we went from sharing 1 to having 3, no intention of buying anymore though. :D

Yep, but then you'll go back to just having 2 again, you kinda have to a full circle first before you learn to come to your senses. :D

That made me laugh! I came to my senses pretty quickly when my 3rd one was backed & needed riding - hence she was sold to a very lovely home and I am now back to 2 and sticking there. 2 is more than enough for me :D

I have 4 and only had 1 a year ago which was my daughters pony.
I missed riding, and my daughters pony wasn't right, so we ended up with a second pony for her, then I bought a youngster for me, then another youngster for her lol.
Then I wanted something to actually ride, so sold the orignal pony and got myself a cob.

Looking back, I had several moments of madness and am determined to get back to 2 but it will take a couple of years as I want to keep my yearling as my long term horse, and my daughter wont out grow her pony for a couple of years, but will then go onto my cob.

So in theory, I wont be buying anymore horses, just selling an outgrown 13.2hh and the youngster bought for her future which I already have up for sale - so hoping on 3 sooner rather than later.

I've learned a lesson now, and am going to be very strict on the 2 only rule, one in, one out! :D
The cost and time and effort of 4 is crazy, if I had my own land it would be different but I dont :(

I had two, was always happy with two, works perfect, I ride and my sister rides.

We got a youngster a month ago and then his field mate left and needed something to live out with him and found another youngster the owner said we can use him till hes old enough to be broken then she is going to loan or sell him, she checks him once a week the rest of the time hes ours to do. We're going to find it hard to part and can see him slowly becoming ours.

lol, i kept trying to come to my senses and only have 1! but it didnt happen. 2 are rescues/companions so they arent going anywhere, i wanted something to ride properly so bought a foal :| and now have nothing to ride for 3 years! haha We arent on livery though, no way we could afford it if we were.

You see jemima_two is slowly coming back to her senses...but not quite.

Think the clue is the member's name jemimaTWO

She'll get there one day. :D;)

OMG really? We've now just got 3. Well, two are mine and Mini TX's. The third has come along very, very recently. She's a pretty little WB mare, 5 years old, broken and turned away. Belongs to YO, who does all the work. All Mini TX does is ride and will bring her along to be sold this time next year. Its still hard work though fitting in 3 horses.

Dont somehow think we will be getting any more though.

Ummmmm, well my own headcount is standing at 12 right now, I must have had 3 at sometime, not sure when though.:(
2 are going this afternoon, and uhh:o 4 more arriving tomorrow morning.

I can't even blame it on having the urge to fill stables for the sake of it because they are never permanently used, it is more an inability to say "No more!" when my business partner phones me up from wherever he is and says "I've got a couple of nice Paint colts here, do we want them?" I don't actually have much of a say in the matter because he'll have done the deal on them anyway.

If I had to be at livery I wouldn't even have 1 though ;)

used to have 7 or 8 at most times but then got a proper job, mortgage etc and cut down to 4.

now have 3 but one is out on loan so only 2 to actually 'do.'

would like to get back to 2 now though.

I've collected them over the years...a few years back, my mum started breeding and then my stepfather started collecting shetlands.....total 37 between us on 40 acres or so. We've dwindled it down, stepfather gave up the shetlands in the end and we kept a couple of the oldies and first homebred. I have 2 (which are in livery at afriends whilst I concentrate on my young family), we have 2 out on loan (permanent loan) and my mum has the first homebred at home with her plus a youngster for company.

It is basically about time management and if you have the land, you tend to fill it! I have rented out my place for the time being which pays for my 2 mares in livery and mum has about 20 acres completely unused now.....farmer pops bullocks on and cuts for hay.

Life is much simpler now....

We have 4, youngest daughter still has her 2 ponies which are now jumped in seniors, other daughter has 1, and I have just (2 months ago) bought a 6 year old for them to share.

I did briefly have 3...somewhere in my dim distant past...I now have 8 ponies :o :D Ok, I never intended to have 8, it just kinda happened :o But having said that I know I am at my limit now as far as time, land etc goes. I know I can afford to pay for the ones I have, give them all enough time etc, if I went any higher I would not be able to which would be unfair on the ones I have and any new ones...so 8 will most definitely never become 9 :)

I started with 1... then it was 2... then it was 3... then jumped to 5... then jumped to 7... then no 4 had a foal to make 8... then no 6 and no 7 went infoal and when they foaled that made 10... then it all gets abit hazy (actually very VERY hazy) and at some point I hit 58 (yes 58) now i'm down to 35 (i think!)

Well past the three mark on 9 but goes up and down so you may be right, and might be getting a baby at end of the month .

I count the smaller ones as half so two of them makes a whole horse and the youngsters dont count as they arent broken and dont need ridden yet it makes you feel better if you do it like this problem is we have so much land and it looks empty especially as there is no sheep on it at this time of year ,and we still have so much grass everytime i look at it i think that could be fattening up a load more horses.
That is why i am single it is so nice not to ever have to hear a whinging man say who needs that many horses and all my family have several of horses so only approve and if one is broken or having a break or too old you always have another to ride.

We started with 1, then got my first pony (no 2) who went to Wales when I got my 2nd pony (no3), who really we shouldn't have gotten but my mum felt sorry for her and she's a nutcase really. After awhile my brother grew out of no 1 horse so we got the big one (no 4) who is still with us. However we realised if we took no1 out with no4, no3 would have nobody and she is a bit of a nutter so got her a mini shetland Puzzle as company (no5). After riding no1 for awhile I realised I didn't get along with her at all (had lost a bit of confidence and she exploited this!) so got no 6 who is now in foal due to her being a fab quick jumping pony so hopefully get a nice BSJA pony (I prefer flat). Then got no7 who is only 6, has a few quirks but is generally a lovely pony who has helped me gain confidence in some areas but needs to gain some himself in areas we both aren't sure of so hoping to share him...
Basically yes, I think you do start to collect after 3.

We now have: no1, no3, no4, no5, no6 and no7. So 6 to be 7 next year and then back down to 6 I think. Though no1, no3 and no4 are getting on so might end up with 2/3 eventually again!

Im at 4 at the moment have gone from one at the start of the year to 4 near the end of the year and im putting one in foal and plan to keep foal so will end up with 5. However have really good deal on land i keep them on and have 2 stables and field shelter if things go wrong with one of them.

well we had 2, then we needed a field companion for the one while the other was hacking, so it became 3, then we brought a couple of mares, one because she was so cheap and so pretty and in foal , and the other to sell, thenn the one to sell was a bit to nice to sell so we thought we'd keep her for the stallion too so that makes 5, and when the foal comes 6, then we have a pure crabbet arab mare comeing on loan next year to breed as we want to continue the bloodline, so thats 7 , and all three mares will be put in foal to Zaanif so the year after that 10 and if the mare thats in foal now has a filly i'll be sorely tempted to keep that too as it is unrelated but beautifully bred, so thats 11...... oh god . i'm going to have to sell a kidney or farm out my womb to a rich gay couple!!!!!! so people thats how it happens

:D Hope for me yet then:D

What sort do you have, one breed, or a variety?

At least with so many my husband would definitely lose the ability to recognise them all, which would be good.:)

I like my paints (I have 4 of those) and palominos (I have 5) because from a distance one yellow one, or a brown and white, looks much like another!;)

We had one, then two, then three, then four! Sadly we lost our old boy this summer so we are down to three again, but I am planning on buying a fourth to bring on and sell soon. We had two for ages but once we bought our third one we bought another one not long after so I think once you get to three, another one really doesn't seem to make much difference!

I am at 7 at the moment which will be a bit crazy in the winter as it snows too much for them to go out so I have to remove enough snow to be able to lunge them. It takes all day so OH gets very jealous. (no clean shirts or food in the cupboards) oopss sorry babe.
I love it though:o
