If you ride walk or care about Bricket Wood, Colney Heath, Nomansland or Chorleywood common, be aware of the plans for fencing part/whole of these commons for grazing of livestock:

The consultation on this ends TOMORROW - if you havent already, please fill in the consultation questionnaire

thankyou!

I ride on Chorleywood common and we have to share it with walkers, dog walkers, mountain bikers, joggers, kids playing football etc, people flying kites, people walking around with push chairs, kids with remote control cars and there's a golf course in the middle! Don't you think this is enough useage for the common? it's not that big after all!

Although there's a horse track round the outside people do all the above activities on the track and it's the horse riders that have to give way to them. We have to stick to the tack and are not allowed to deviate.

I have lost count the amount of times riders have come back to the yard to say they have been attacked/chased by dogs, last time we were chased by a 'pack' of 2 Westies that were biting at the horses heels. Thankfully the horses were good as gold and we stopped for the woman to get her dogs under control, which she couldn't so we decided to carry on walking with these dogs chasing us and the dog owner chasing her dogs trying to get them back and shouting at us!!!!

i went to the meeting on horse back at nomansland, and every question i asked the counciller, he didnt have an answer for!!

we ran rings round him and he eventually agreed he would have to revise his plans a bit!!!

all of this work/ fencing is for 4-6 cows for 3 months a year. is it worth it????

please do all sign!! my yard is opposite nomansland and i dont want to lose my hacking!!!
they also propose to put a cattle grid about 10ft away from my field gate.
i have told them where they can stick that idea.................

great thankyou everyone!!

heres my 2p worth as well......

the whole thing is being handled v badly, Colney Heath PC say theyve already decided to do it anyway (!) yet allowed CMS to do the consultation which we were all filling in in good faith, silly us!! CHPC Have now agreed (we demanded a meeting with them and the local councillor) to take account of the consultation - gee thanks guys....

There is huge public opposition to this - the commons are about the only open unrestricted land left open to riders in the urban environment, there shouldnt even be the thought of enclosing them, however well meaning and there are other ways to achieve the conservation objectives as yet unexplored by the councils who cant see beyond the Defra part grant for the grazing.

Whats the betting that as soon as the fencing is up the common will be full of wormy looking coloured horses (entires and mares) that seemingly dont belong to anyone too.....esp in Colney Heathwhere we already have a lot of probs in that area....

Oh and Im a member of the Rare Breeds Survival Trust so do support and understand conservation grazing, but these sites are NOT suitable and will just do harm to peoples views of preservation of rare breeds.

finished rant now, thanks again!!

The BHS Bridleway Officers have been working very hard at trying to prevent the fencing of the common as it will restrict riders access and use of it. We do however need many more local horse riders who use the common to contact Herts County Council and express their views on the matter.

My boy wont put up with dogs running round his back legs, he will kick, he booted an out of control alsation, it went off yelping, people should keep their dogs under control.
