What were the full siblings like?? Similarities and differences.....

I thought it was boring going back to the same stallion (in my case I used Wish upon a star) but a friend said she was nothing like her siblings and its the same in horses, which of course it is I suppose (having no brothers or sisters I hadnt really thought about that!)

So do you think its boring? And what have your full siblings been like? Obviously WUAS is still a really good choice for my mare, just wondering if I should go back...

We had two full sisters by Green Horizon, what a different pair, but only in looks the temprement is the same don't know if this works all the time. I had half brothers from the early days they were similar.

I will look out some photo's of the girls.

I had two by Big Connaught, same mar eof course. First, a chestnut was a stunning chap, won his class and was top priced two year old at the old Malvern Festival of the Horse Sales they used to have; he went on to go county showing and did very well. Two years later we had a bay weed that had everything wrong that could go wrong as a foal but ended up as big and strong as his brother, again attractive but sharper; did very well at RC level, particularly dressage. Out of same mare had two by Embla Statesman, both chestnut and very similar but the filly had more quality about her although he was more feisty. He's 20 now, has done everything, won at WH, BSJA'd, been evicted from Reaseheath College and is now a happy hacker hunter a few miles away from me running his loaner ragged but she loves him so much, he can do no wrong; the filly (?!) has only had two homes in her life and the owner is besotted with her, thinks she's the best thing since sliced bread so one set were similar, the other set weren't.

I bred two full brothers by Strinesdale Matador out of my tobiano Uptons Deli Circus mare.
The obvious difference that one was coloured (minimal marked red and white) and the other one was bay.
The coloured gelding made 14 hands and the other made over 15 hands. The bay was more of a middleweight SHP type and the coloured alot lighter. Their temperaments were totally different.

Also meant to add, Sasha has had three by Aimbry Chester. The first, a filly is 14.2, won two 1st Premiums at Futurity and was Mare Champion at her grading; second a colt is now 15.2; third, Tonka looks to be getting to the 15 hand mark and seems to have more bone than the others so more a SHP/competition prospect build wise. Their common denominator is they're all various shades of bay.

my mares had 2 Ontario foals. Theyre both the spit of eachother but Jude (now 2) is a lot quieter than Otti (10 weeks) is. Both very sweet boys and almost identical but so very different.
x

By coincidence I have been to End House Stud today looking at Aimbrey Chester for my tobiano broodmare and her homozygous filly ( I knew I couldn't take a year out).

I know it is deviating from the thread but I saw an absolutely stunning colt out of one of their mares.

I own an Aimbry Chester full sister and she and all his brothers are as alike as peas in a pod. Sometimes full siblings are very, very similar.

I sold the colt at 6 months and have lost touch, but right now at a year he will look like a cut and shut if the fillies were anything to go by (also had a palomino filly out of the same mare)
2008 filly: This was taken around her 2nd birthday (standing 14.1h now) and I would expect the colt to be a very similar build. I am so pleased with the 2 year old, just what I aimed to breed, pretty head, bit of extra substance and a sensible mind.

By contrast, a 3 month old Paint by the same stallion is already built like the proverbial outhouse.
Temperament wise much the same.

Well I have had two full brothers out of my Fleetwater Opposition mare and by Groomsbridge May I. They are very different (not in bad ways) but I think that is more because the first one was a first foal, and he is a classic first foal - small, neat and compact, whereas this year's is very rangy and athletic. Both of them are very similar temperament wise, although the second is a little more confident - probably because the mare is more confident this year (first foal she spent the first few days protesting every time it had a drink and probably scared him a bit!).

Second colt

The mare is going to Kings Composer this year, as I feel the more old fashioned TB works well on her - she already has plenty of blood herself, and enough warmblood through Fleetwater Opposition to produce good movers. She will definately go back to May I though, I'm just curious to see what else she produces from a different stallion!

I have three siblings from the same stallion and mare who I've also owned and competed since babies. Stallion is bay, and the first one was his colour, the other two are black/brown like the dam. All very laidback affectionate types, but the two geldings have much more bone than the mare. The mare is also more "on the ball" as regards catching, just like her mother! Funnily enough, all three are very dominant types in the field, whereas both sire and mare were very non confrontational. The first is now out eventing, and clear in all six outings BE100, not a surprise considering both parents were natural jumpers, which the two boys in particular have inherited, jumping out of their fields on occasion!
Here they are in order,

Sylla above and Rummy below Rummy was smaller being the first foal but very musled and his full sister was a much larger stamp but they both move the same and they are both bold and brave

She has a foal at foot by KC who will be going to the Futurity. Then I am looking for somebody to take her eventing. I hope she'll be as good as her dam who was a 2* Intermediate.

My little coloured mare has a full sister, two years younger than her. My girl was a first foal, and as another poster has said, classic first foal - correct and compact. Sh'ell make no more than 15.1hh when she is done growing and is very athletic. When her sister was two years old she was bigger than my mare is now, much rangier but a very similar stamp. Very similar temperaments and almost identical in the face.

Both out of a trakehner mare and both by the young coloured stallion Vagebont. Both bred and raised by Vagelloron Stud, so very similar starts in life too. I couldn't be more pleased, they already know I would have another sibling - the combination works and can't think why you wouldn't repeat it! Maybe I am a little biased...!

Now my friend has two full brothers, similar in the expression in their eyes and thats about where the connection ends! Similar type, one has a lot more bone and will be a good bit bigger (neither were first foals), one is extremely laid back and placid, the other is a l ot sharper albeit still kind. Be interesting watching their paths in life!

Thanks for you replies, now im more confused than ever!!!

Cundlegreen your 3 are just lovely, you must be very pleased...

Angrove, yours are just lovely, part of me would love to try and breed a coloured but Id probably get a ugly one!!!!!

Addonis is gorgeous and has the same look as Wiz and after lovely cuddles at the expo with him I would consider him, but I really want a jumper thats proven...i think....

Enfys, yours all do look like the same stamp dont they, lovely ponies.

Thanks everyone, time for more pondering me thinks x

Hi Vicki - I think it also depends on whether your mare is clean bred. We have bred lots of full siblings and the ones that are the most like each other have had purebred parents - not sure if that makes sense. When I have repeated matings with part breds the results are more varied. Incidently as 2 of the stallions u like I have repeated matings here goes - the 2 WUAS full siblings I bred are both black/both fillies and very much the same stamp but one is much bigger than the other and foal nos 7 and 8 for the mare so no first foal syndrome there. Grafham have 3 WUAS full siblings out of their coloured Amerigo Vespucci mare (in sale) 1 x coloured, 1 tried hard to be coloured (white belly) and one ches - all quite a similar stamp. My 2 Brief Encounter sisters are quite different out! that probably did not help.

We have two sisters we breed from and their offspring are always the same, Judy's are chunkier and calmer natured, Jenny's feistier and more beautiful, and slightly smaller. One has produced a 15 hander, the other a 16.3 hh yet ther is only two inches height difference between the mares, and both went to the same stallion.
Ours have been fun in that none are identical to each other and markings vary too.
If you like what came out the first time, the next will probably be even better (no logic to that, just that often happens here!)

Emerald (highland pony) has two full sisters, all by a highland stallion

Their dam was dun but has turned grey, the sire was mouse dun.

Emerald scrapes in at just under 14hh, did well showing in hand and has been a fabulous mum and a great riding pony, is mouse dun.

Amber grew a little bigger and more althletic and was also mouse dun

Sapphire appears to be destined to be more petite and will turn grey.

They are all quite quiet and easy to handle.

Emerald is expecting a full brother or sister to Onyx any day now so I will have a more first hand view in a few days

I saw full sisters at Upton Stud & they were as different as could be. One about 15.2ish mid bay, small & compact, her elder full sister was over 16hh, drk bay & very rangy. Going by what most have said about them being so different, if you had a foal that you were not so keen on would it put you off using the same stallion? Just wondered because 2nd time round you might strike lucky!

we have at work a few full siblings,(all pony mares) we have two full siblings by Wurlitzer, five by Mooiman and two other Mooimans out of the same mare who had the Wurlitzer ones

the two Wurlizters are very similar in personality but one is much more pony like and has a bit more movement the other is a bit heavier and horsey, our five mooimans are quite different they seem to of come out in pairs, the first two are ideantical but one has a much prettier head, the next two are identical but much finer than the first ones and the most recent, and probably the nicest has a bit more bone than the two before hand

the other two moo's are totally different one is very sharp and quite light and araby where as the other is very quiet and chunky

I have had 2 foals out of a pony mare by the same sire and the first was a typical first foal-neat and lighter than the second. Both had the same temprement. the second is a much stronger lad (they are both geldings) and coloured (the stallion is coloured) where as the first was black like the mare. However the second foal is the image of the mare in all but colour, and the first the image of the stallion in all but colour!!
I also put my ISH mare to the same stallion twice and got two identical babies-niehter were first foals, both were bay, the image of the stallion with my mares bone and same temps. One was a filly and the other was a colt.
So I guess ya never know!!

I've had two by Guaranteed Gold. A colt and a filly. They are peas in a pod, but with the feminine and masculine characters being obvious too. Oh, and one is tobiano and the other solid

they are both bold and friendly and smart as whips. I think the colt is actually better than the filly, although she has a marginally better shoulder/freedom of shoulder than him.

These two are also full brother and sister both tobiano Homozygous, they are almost like twins and they are not out of a pure bred mare but not far off they are both 7/8th TB.

cherry pie 08 and arctic roll 09.
Vicki there is no reason why you should not have a nice one.

Following on from what Mugsgame has said there are actually 3 siblings. The 1st whom mugsgame owns will make around 15.1hh as stated, her sister who is a 3yo is standing 15.3hh already and IMO has a little more bone and then their full brother who is 2yo this year is standing at 15.3hh and has more bone than the girls. The 2 girls have very similar heads including face markings. Mugsgame's mare is coloured but with very few patches, the 3yo is extremely well marked with a lot of patches, then their brother is completely bay with a tiny white sock and tiny star! All have had the same start in life as all 3 were bred by myself but each time seem to be growing bigger! I have repeated the match for the 4th time in the hope i will breed a filly to keep as the mare is now 18yo this year but im beginning to think im going to end up with a giant the way they keep growing in size each time! Oh and knowing my luck my mare will give me another colt! As long as healthy though :)

*Ahem* we like our few patches!!! ;-) I would like to order another as discussed the other day!! Ha ha!! I am not sure if you have an even bigger one I would wish the jumping ability on you or not!! Great for the performance horse but just imagine how high your fences are going to have to be for the first four years!!!!! It will be very interesting to see my mares first foal and how he/she grows size wise, and how much of the same character and temperament are passed on.

I want to stick with a pure breed to cover my 13hh pony as she has a mixed pedigree, but I already know if I am happy with the first one I would repeat the mating without hesitation.

I guess with whoever you choose you always have the potential to breed a cracker if you have chosen wisely, but at the same time, odd rogues can pop out of the woodwork and leave you a bit puzzled!
