WOW! Respect!!! For a start, your show working hunter can actually hunt. For a second he's thin and fit enough to hunt. For a third, you let him risk becoming "not show quality" by doing something he, and obviously you, love doing. I didn't think anyone existed who actually hunted the same horse in the same week as showing at the level of HOYS !

Great to hear I was wrong.

thank god people do actually hunt their "working hunters" and good on you for doing it. it makes me laugh when you watch it at county level and they come round one after another and its obvious they would never see a hunting field i think working hunters should have to have a card signed like point 2 pointers once they start gettin to higher levels.

And as you can see from my picture, my Bethan loves across country. So I'm looking forward to hunting with her. She's also loved by Joe Cordwell and Alan French in the show ring. :) Dispite her high spirits and excitement when a jump gets placed in front of her.

All of the hunters I have had have all shown at county level.
Very much agree with the "getting a card marked" remark. I think most of the top level WH riders will say mine goes hunting, but they (horses) would never be able to do a whole day! Or what I class as a whole day. ;)

I fret mine could acctually last all day! 0_0 she's just so excitable and full of energy. As soon as she sees a fence, it's a challange to keep her in a nice, forward pace. Bless her. :)

thanks for the facebook page!

I know for a fact the Olivers hunt their show horses - Robert fieldmastered off his - Kings General and Kings Warrior, Superted, Portman all hunted and JCB went hunting on his retirement and was a fantastic huntsman horse. Claire, his wife and Sophie his daughter are hunting some this season.

Louise Bell certainly hunts her workers

and I'm hunting mine (although he's not in their league yet!)

Is it wrong that my working hunter is only going to do WH showing classes now that he's not really sound enough to hunt?! He can do a WH round and little show easily but I wouldn't risk him on a day's hunting now ;)

I do hope you get some CB owners joining. See my post of the line up in USA of 18 CB's at an invitation hunt.

Someting we won't have seen in the UK since 1930's - sadly.

CC - we've got the opposite - an old boy who can only hunt - he doesn't do hard ground, so he only hunts in mud! (no going out at the moment either!)

Thanks guys- i am proud that my show cob has been sometimes dropped a place for not being gross and obese :) At SFAS at HOYS, he was described as "a real stamp of a hunting cob" the best and truest description of him.He is the bright bay in my avatar- that picture was taken at the opening meet , the third fence was a decent hedge and my brace of cobs were among a handful who jumped it!

He is now 18 and took a (nervous) friend on NYD so they could "nanny" me on a youngster. We came to a reasonable rail/ditch jump and she was a little scared so i told her to hold the neckstrap and let him do his job, whilst i gave the lead. He stormed past me and flew it as if to say " I've never needed a lead before and i'm not taking one now" We have had quite a few "names" hunting with us and very few stay for more than an hour whereas i stay all day unless there is a very good reason not too (lost shoe etc)
you will have to copy and paste these links i am afraid..

Many show horses hunt, in fact I encourage it. Did none of you see Horse & Hound in November? Silverstream with Jayne Webber and a few more of us show people supported Amanda Stewarts first meet as a master of the VAGSB and were then photographed on show horses on page four of the Horse & Hound.

Amanda's show cob Tapestry her main hunt secs horse was also regularly shown and that won RIHS!

I hunt my pure arab who is a show horse!!! (In My Sig!!!!)

It was his first season under saddle in 2009 and he was placed in the top 4 in a every county show he entered every top 3 in every inhand class he entered!!! :D

I also plan to do HOYS quals this or next year depending on how this season goes!!!

He is very special to me but how can I deprive him for hunting ha ha when he LOVES it!!! I just make sure he has lots of boots on and protection and don't go over the top on the hedges!!! haha as he has one great jump and a jumps all the hedges!!!

Every horse should have the chance to hunt!!! Tiger LOVES it

Here's some pictures of him showing (ignore the jumping saddle in the first pic :p )

Totally agree JC.
I have been saying this for many, many years.
I would also like to see additional Show Hunter Classes for horses which have been "properly hunted" during the previous season.
Again, we come back to "the card" situation.
My late, great father used to take great delight in blowing a horn outside "a hunter ring".
It was very obvious which sets of 4-legs had heard one previously but it used to rev up my mare (who hated showing) brilliantly!!

working hunter qualifying.....

But a lot of the top workers hunt anyway (see previous posts)so how would that change anything?

If you had classes for horses that had "properly" hunted - you'd still have the Bells, Walkers and Olivers.... wouldn't change the line up!

Sorry but I do have to disagree with you on that point.
So very obvious from the way they jump a course - they Show Jump it rather than WH it.

As someone who used to hunt and show working hunters - my hunt was not one that jumped. So I have to agree with previous poster and say that just because they are taught to jump (but not jump out in the hunting field) does not prove that they do not go out hunting.

I don't disagree that a lot of workers are asked to jump in more of a SJ style than a more forward WH style - but I think that is also to do with the tracks they're jumping - a lot of flimsy upright fences with tricky distances. It's difficult to be forwad and free flowing when you're having to twist & turn all the time. Also, the rings seem to be getting smaller!

My worker hunts with the Ledbury over all our hedge country and jumps open tracks - but he also has BSJA winnings which helps hugely - I would love to let him flow on and jump as he does out hunting, but I'd leave the arena in two strides!
