If you sold a horse and the buyer changed its stable name....

We've changed all of ours, including their registered names :D

Dizzy was Zima, but that sounded far too grown up and sensible for her, so now even her old owner calls her Dizzy :D. I can't decide between 'The Dizzy Blonde' or 'Pretty Amazing Grace' for her registered name though, so that's something to get done soon.

I was told it was unlucky to change names, but any issues our lot have they came with, so I don't think it is unlucky to change a name :cool::p:rolleyes::D
 
Ru was originally Rusty.... I hated it as I thought it was a boys name, So after some hard thinking, bearing in mind I always called her Ru, or precious I changed it to Ruby!
 
Don't care if new owners change names,and giving a new animal a name is part of the fun :p
I would never want to change a prefix(breeders work bloody hard and deserve to ahve their stables name "out there") but stable names are up to the new owners and a change of show name wouldnt bother me at all as long as any reference to the breeder it came with was kept.
 
Once I have sold, the horse is no longer mine, and I dont mind at all. A gelding I bought years back was called Mac which I didnt like at all (kept thinking of a dirty old man in a raincoat but thats probaly says more about my mind:rolleyes:). I converted Mac to Matt and that worked fine for both of us.
 
Have never changed a stable name myself, but they were all ok. One I had named previously when he came to be broken before I bought him. "Skinny Chestnut Thing" just didn't roll off the tongue.
I used to work at a dealers and people changed names all the time. Wierdest was a horse we sold called Seymore the new owners changed his name to Plug! Also a Milly became Bert. But hey what ever floats your boat
 
I dont mind a changed stable name but hate it when people reregister a horse with another name. I sold a yearling tb he was registered with my prefix and the name Talisker Bay, which I thought was a nice name. He was sold on to Brooke Staples and became a good event horse, I was proud but it would have been nice to have had my prefix and the name I chose. As I had bred him and at the time had a few home breds for sale it could only have helped my cause to have his original name.
 
Bentley looks fabulous, did you sort out the soundness problem he had last year?

I'd keep "Bingo", its unusual, in a good way. :cool:

To whoever said changing horses' names is bad luck - superstitious bollox. Luck is luck, ie something you have no control over, lol.

Mrs M, I would like to vote for The Dizzy Blonde. :D

i have my next horses name picked out. i will change it no matter what the owner says lol :)

What name did you pick?

My mare's stable name was Lady *cringes* so when I bought her I changed it to Tia Maria. I think it suited her much better.

My new boy is called Bertie... I cant decide whether to keep his name or change it. Passport name is Comer Coal. I was thinking maybe Connor or something like that.
 
I gave my shetland away, she was called prudence and came to call (to pru normally) and they changed it to star (she was black and had a star) which i thought was really un-original and unimaginative!!
 
Harry is cool.

I've now thought of a new name for Bertie. I think Cooper will suit him and i'll feel better calling him if he was called that hehe. He's a skewbald.
 
We've (kind-of) changed a couple of my Dad's. His big TB was called CP by the owners (his initials), but you can just imagine calling 'CP.... seepey!' down the field. I think not. He's now called Prince, which is part of his name anyway and suits him a lot more, although we found out that when he was on a training yard before we got him he was known as Finley.

The other is a NF pony who came with the stable name Monk. Bit of a weird one imo. Anyway, that's been lengthened to Monkey, which suits him a lot more, especially now he's getting a bit more confident. Plus there are lots of words that you can add to Monkey- Monkey Puzzle or Monkey Nut being the current favourites!
 
Your horse you can call them what you like.

When i bought Gulliver he was called "Oliver, Please Sir" what a stupid name so i registered him as "Gully Gum Drops" stable name Gulliver, ended up being Gully to his friends!!!
Admittedly Gully Gum Drops isn't sensible but i don't care, it brought a smile to most judges faces and the commentator always had a giggle in his voice when reading out his name!!!
My other horse...
Sedgemoor is the name of the stud i brought him from and they named him Chaos hence Sedgemoor Chaos...I kept this as his registered name on his passport and with the society but his stable name is Indi...he never responded to Chaos!!!
I wanted to keep his stud name as i think that it defines him and it's unique, but i quite like the name Sedgemoor Chaos anyway.
The breeder helped me choose the name Indi...other names we considered were Morgan, Inca, Jude and Minstrel but my OH likes the Indiana Jones films so we went with Indi.
Must admit if Indi's name had been as bad as Gullivers original name i probably would have changed it!!!

I haven't heard that one...would that be along the same lines as

Saluting Magpies, 7 years bad luck if you break a mirror, having peacock feathers in your house etc...

I don't know why the above would change the luck of anything?
 
I have changed 5 out of the 7 we have. Changed the little mini's to Puzzle instead of Paddy (we don't do human names for animals), Mac from Jack due to their being another Jack on the livery yard at the time and the woman got a bit "iffy" over our pony having the same name though he gets called "Smaccy". Willow from Hazel as mum hated the name Hazel for her. Kodak(Kodi in my sig) was called Percy which he never knew at all, just completely looked at me blank, don't know if the old owner knows but it suits him as he loves to be photographed :) And Quiz came from a dealer so had no name.

The other two came as Tanzie and Zantie, very ironic that only two letters had changed. Zant's foal next year is currently known as "Blobby" due to it being a blob, but that will change when its born :)

It is up to the new owner if they want to change the name or not though, so I wouldn't mind if any of them had their name changed if they got sold on.

Yep! Probably in the same category as all of the above, along with walking under ladders and stepping on cracks in the pavement! :D
 
Lol, Superstitions are so strange :D

I'm not superstitious about anything and always make me giggle when people think that by doing or not doing something due to a superstition is going to change the outcome...Most of them are common sense

Don't walk under ladders...because something might drop on your head :confused:
Don't walk on the cracks of pavements...because you might trip :confused:

I don't know the reasons for bad luck when changing a horses name, just the same as i don't know why people salute a magpie...

I'm sure that someone on this forum will know the answer, your a clever bunch ;)

Well I got stuck with the name Zorro so would much prefer 'Romeo' haha! I would have loved to have changed his name but just couldn't think of a decent new one! Feel like a right idiot calling him as the field is next to a pub!
 
It has happened with me, and my reaction would be the same if it happened agin. Why should it bother me?
I have changed the names of several I have bought.
