Hi,

I've been looking at a few youngsters for sale, mainly ones that have had tack on, lunged, long reined and even sat on but not schooled away. Do you think it would be fair to ask the sellers of said youngsters to see this being done, if you went to see it?

Just wanted peeps opinions really!

Thanks!

No, it's perfectly reasonable to see how far along they are in their training and if seller is honest they won't have anything to hide

Ask to see as much as possible, the more you see the more you know which will help you make a decision, just like you would if you were viewing any other horse.

If I was selling a young horse and said that it lunged etc then I'd expect the person that is coming to see to want me to put the horse through its paces.

Some dealers might not want to mess around like that but if you selling a horse you should take the time to show the person how far the horse has come in it's training.

I would want to see everything the vendor claimed HAD been done. But TBH I would be a bit suspicious of a youngster that had been sat on (just). It's only a TINY step from 'sat on' to being able to walk and trot (at LEAST) on both reins IF the horse is going to be relatively easy to finish!

But MANY young horses will tolerate being 'sat on' - as long as they don't have to move!! If they're got this far and stopped - I'd wonder why!! We have one being backed (by us) at present which did laidback for England right up to the point where we led him forward the first time with rider sat on him - when he exploded! We got him past it, but that sort of horse DOES require a lot more time and skill (and danger money!)
