Don't know if I should be tempted or not, but found this little chap:
http://www.preloved.co.uk/adverts/show/108154209/reg-welsh-section-a.html
Free to a good home.. Literally a 5mins drive away from me..

I currently have my three donkeys at mine, living out. A stallion, yearling gelding and yearling filly..

I have 2 weeks left of my college course, and then I am going into work. (Hopefully.)

At the moment I earn around £350 a month, this is because of college, and when I leave I'm aiming to gain another job..

Animals live at home (With parents.)

Basically I need you to get some sense into me, and persuade me not to get this little fella. .

Also, how much is gelding? In case I do.... :o :o

Stop it. Don't even think about it. Step away from the adverts.

Is that any good? Lol. He is very cute, why is he free, is it just because of the market at the moment? He'd look very cute with donkeys. :)

Thats what I keep telling myself, but then I think to myself, He wont do anything for 2-3years.. so he would be living out.. and he would look very cute with the donkeys!

I'm not sure, I haven't spoken to the seller, might drop them an email, it says he is also well bred. so am wondering why he is free! :)

If I were in your situation, I wouldn't. Once you start working (and it might not happen straight away) you are eventually going to want to move out and have your own home; I certainly wouldn't be adding mouths to feed. I'm also not keen on this particular animal, although that's a terrible photo to judge by.

Would you want this one if it was £500, or is it just the fact that it's free? A free thing is only a bargain if it's something you would otherwise spend money on.

What are you plans for the other three? Are you going to geld the stallion at any point?

no such thing as a free horse/pony - they all need a farrier, dentist, vet and hay throughout the winter. Does that help put you off? :D

I think you have enough on your plate already if I'm honest. And a genuine and non judgemental question... Why do you have a stallion, are you planning on gelding it or breeding from it? Just a query, don't want to start a bun fight, but unless its superb I'd be gelding it, especially with the filly around.

Go for it - then they can breed another next year and give that away too. How irresponsible of them when the markets already flooded with these little guys. Not getting at you here, just irresponsible breeders who give the good ones a bad name.

No, stallion is not being gelded (He is a donkey, sorry to use the term stallion, I did mean 'Jack')

He is a 'Jack' sorry, like I said above, I do tend to use the word stallion, he's not being gelded, He's got (Hopefully) alot of talent for the showring, so will not be gelded, hoping to start his in-hand career this summer/next summer, and then he will be broken to harness.

Same with the yearlings, they will be shown next year as two year olds, then at somepoint broken to drive or maybe ride. :)

How can you possibly keep those animals on £350 a month (which is not a salary and about to end)?? But of course if your parents are happy to fund your little collection - collect away.

Re: If you were in my situation.. Would you?

Id stay away from the adverts, as others have said, you seem to have more than enough on your plate.

By all means see if your parents want it.

You're not currently in a position to take it on yourself though it seems.

[Based on what you've said on this thread it sounds as though you're currently a student about to graduate with no 'proper' job lined up and a part-time job that wouldn't keep the donkey's you do have if you and they weren't being supported by your parents - although I may have misunderstood that.]

Think you have enough, tbh and who would back it? You'd be funding some careless breeder who'll then stick another on the market.

Second the stallion and filly comment - hope they are suitably separated.

if I were you, I would definitely NOT get this fellow. It costs around £500 to geld.

Have to agree with the others and say definitely don't get another! Have no idea how you're affording what the ones you currently have (though I imagine keeping them at your parents helps) but doubt your current funds will stretch much further and once you find a full time job you may find you have a lot less free time than you think.

Op, to be honest at one point I had two horses, kept at home, house was owned so no mortgage or rent, bills all covered by partners business, I earnt 1200 a month i bought the monthly food for two... And the rest of the cash was mine, hay and straw was free and at points after car, phone, vets, insurance etc... I still was pushing it at times. Enjoy what you have and ensure your Jenny is separate from your jack.

I'd like to point out to all of you, that my parents do not fund anything.

I have worked hard for my three, and yes I can afford them.

Thanks.

No, Jack and Filly are not seperated.

£350 is not enough Hun, sorry it just isn't, and I would expect you will have another mouth to feed anyway if they are not separated so, again the answer is no, don't do it.

You asked to be talked out of it and for voices of reason, you have had those voices... If you are hell bent on ignoring them you will.

I'm not hell bent on ignoring those reasons on getting the 'freebie' I've listened to the reasons of not getting him, and am not.

It the comments saying that I cannot afford to look after my three, when I can.

So there you go.....why get another when it looks like you will have another on the way soon anyway!!!
How irresponsible!!!

You'll need to let us know the secret of how you can afford 3, (poss 4 if filly is in utero), for so little. I struggle to pay for 1.

Yikes.... No i wouldn't plain and simply.

By the sounds of things you have another on the way or are planning on breeding another little'un. You say you want to break the Jack to drive, that will be a lot of work in itself, baring in mind this little colt will need gelding, and work done such as breaking in to give him a bright future should you wish to sell him.

Farrier - Barefoot (Obviously, so trim once every 2 months..) at £15 each, thats £45 every two months,
-hay is cut and baled from our own fields.
They have about a bale and a half a week over winter months. So that is about £5 a week I pay my dad.
They have no extra feed at all.
Live out 24/7, may come in if weather is shocking.
I keep £100 a month into my savings, incase of emergencies. (Currently have about a grand saved.)

Worming twice a year. at £10 a tube (Which does all 3.)

I also pay dad £25 a month for grazing.

Fair enough. All credit to you for keeping them cheap as chips (helped by a cracking rate for your grazing, and subsidised hay).

I'd look at it from the perspective that if it cost you £500, would you still be wanting it?
This is the problem with 'free to good home', it encourages folk who probably wouldn't be looking to impulsively go out and get a 'freebie' - and as we all know, with horses there is no such thing!

If you wait until you are financially secure in full time employment (and then it is time that becomes an issue with youngsters) maybe think about it then, but honestly with the three (possibly more) donkeys I think you'll have enough on.
