Would you expect them to ask to attend certain shows, or only when you personally offer?

If say they are using your transport, and have attended many shows with you and your horse over a few years (and always do pretty well), would you expect them to voice when they want to go to a certain show, or always wait until you offer?

Would you take it as possibly being a bit rude/forward thinking that they ask to go to a show with you and ride your horse without you offering first? (Whether or not you were originally planning to go being irrelevant)

This also applies to things like clinics/XC schooling/lessons you need to travel to etc. And only when the owner has the one horse, so it's not a case of you both going together on separate horses - you're both using the same horse at the said show.

Just curious on the opinions and the dos/don'ts of sharing really!

When I shared I 'suggested' a few things (my mares owner had another horse so we went together)

Ask once and see what the reaction is - word it so its easy to say no and if it goes down like a lead ballon dont try again!

I have always said that if there is anything my loaner wants to do let me and ill see if it is a good idea. but mostly i say yes and we both go and slpit the riding between us

I have a pony that I have riders for, slightly different because I don't ride her. But I am more than happy for someone to suggest going somewhere to me.

If my sharer particularly wanted to attend a show, then I would be happy for her to ask me. However, if I had something on that day and couldn't take her to the show, then I would hope she would understand that I had a prior commitment.

I think it can sometimes cause a problem when you have just the one horse, and you are at the same level - for example, both want to do the 2ft class, or both want to do the Prelim dressage. I wouldn't mind my sharer asking, but would expect there to be a bit of give and take re the classes that could be entered. However, I suppose it depends on the type of share - is it a 50/50 share, or does the sharer help a couple of days a week?

My sharer has been helping me on and off for about 10 years now, so I hope she feels OK to ask me - but I suppose if it is a recent share arrangement it might be a bit more difficult.

Not sure if that helps at all. :)
