How much do you think you would make?

I was having a random chat with OH and we wrote some stuff down etc and thought if I was to sell everything horses and equipment and riding clothing etc, I could probably make about £20,000!!!!

Mad isnt it, though the boys aren't going anywhere I would love to see that in my bank balance!

not a great deal but no money could make me part with either of mine!

horse equipment perhaps £1500 tops

horse value - zero on the older horse being 20 this year but sound as a pound
younger horse - not a great deal, not successful competition wise, recovering well from a fractured cannon bone

however to replace both horses as 4 yr olds i would expect they would cost me around £12k-£15k for the both (not each)

Well mine is an equine business so I know exactly what I'd have if I were to sell everything. All of our stock (horses), tack, equipment, machinery, property etc is evaluated annually. Put it this way we could retire very comfortably if we sold up

Back in the day a fortune when I was competing regularly on my good horses and spent all my salary on keeping me and them looking good!!

Nowadays with a 25 year old retired horse and a green 6 y.o on loan very little.....!!

Every thing has either gone walkies, got covered in dust never to be seen again or my mum has thrown when moving from the house we had growing up thinking I wouldn't compete or hunt again...;-(

She has never heard of Ebay!!

This.

Our place is nothing on the scale of SF's, but we would be comfortable rather than very comfortable.

Depends which country we both moved to ;):D We could live like royalty in India :D

;):D:D So we could.

I couldn't afford a house in a sub-division if we went back to the UK :(

Downsizing is going to be my problem though, finding it hard to imagine having even just 10 acres :(

We've decided to buy a little farm with 20 acres or so when we eventually sell up. Most of the old horses will be dead by then and the keepers will be minimal. Right now if we were to go we only have 12 keepers so if we were to do it now they'd be fine on smaller acreage. Would you want to move back to the UK though?

Oh My God!
NO!
Never.
Ever

I love the UK, but really I couldn't possibly live there any more, the bits we could afford are just too small, too crowded.

SF and Nadolig, you are now on my official 'remember to be jealous of and hate' list. I wish, I wish, I wish I could ever hope to afford even a couple of acres :)

Consider me jealous and you hated. Grrrrrrrrr

Ooooh I forgot to add, I am available for sponsorship or adoption.

I don't think it would be a massive amount but it's hard to know what things are worth second hand.
The trailer would be the most expensive thing at about £2.5k,
followed by his highness - at 17, and not able to jump any more but a great fun hack and easy to do probably £750?
Saddle maybe £500,
3 bridles and bits maybe £100 for the lot or a bit more as the myler bit might go for £30 second hand?
Rugs - 2 old fal m/w turnouts, one new Premier Equine one and 3 lightweights (well 2 one's no longer waterproof, don't know why I've still got it!) a stable rug and a cooler, maybe £200 for all of them? I'd probably get £100 for the new PE but the others would be about £20 each if I was lucky.
2 Snuggy hoods, £30 each?
Boots are all too trashed to sell as would grooming kit stuff be.
3 numnahs (I don't go mad with buying things like that!) at about £2 each.
Feedbins probably worth nothing as they're just dustbins - maybe £1 each!
Rubber matting and haybar would probably make £75 - (it's a big stable so lots of rubber matting!)
That makes about £4,300. Oh I suppose my jods and riding jacket would make a few bob too. My boots are trashed and I'd never sell a used hat. Then there's the little nicknacks that would all add up, spurs whips, stock, riding shirts etc. Maybe £4.5k max

I don't go overboard with buying stuff, my horses get what they need but I don't see them as an excuse to go mad with 20 numnahs or pairs of boots or riding clothes for myself. I wear old t-shirts and jumpers that are no good for wearing out anymore to ride in rather than buying specific tops for riding and my riding coat is years old.

Maybe I should spoil myself a bit more:D

Lol Enfys. No I couldn't live in a built up area and as much as the UK is lovely, so are lots of other places in the world.

There's plenty of room over here for one more :D

Where are you? My good friends flew out to Canada on the 1st to start a new life together, they are living in Abbotsford for now I think.... I am such a big chicken and I know I will regret it later in life. Are you in Canada or just Enfys?

Ok, so that's room for me and the giant cob sorted.... I just need an address :)

Oh and back to the original thread, I think I would make about 5k if I sold up.

On the subject of the value of one's horses, tack, equipment, I saw a very humorous signature on another forum:

"My biggest fear is that when I die, my husband is going to try to sell all my horses and tack for what I told him they cost."

I'm about 4 or 5 hours away from Enfys :) Don't be a chicken! You only live once so you should make the most of it :)

Abbotsford, BC? Strewth, I have just Map Quested that, to drive, from me, it would be:

42 hrs 43 mins / 4280.38 kilometres  ... and three time zones, there are six across Canada.

Canada is a big country :D

Good Luck to them, I can remember what it was like going through immigration and the Officer greeting us with "Welcome to Canada, you are now British Canadians" :D

If you want to do it, do it, nothing has to be forever, I know several people who have come over and returned to the UK because it wasn't for them. Oddly enough they've all been in SK and Manitoba.
