Do you give them a bed?
Moving to a new yard on sat and my mare will be in during the day and out at night.
Some people dont give them a bed, but Im such a wet blanket Im planning on doing her one incase she wants to lie down for a daytime snooze :)
Bearing in mind when Im not at work shel be in from about 9 - 4 , 3 days a week, and probably longer when Im working.

well it depends will she have rubber matting or a softer floor or concrete, if its concrete then i would either ask if you could place some mats down to cushion it a little for her to stand on or if she does want to lie down and just sprinkle some shaving or what ever bedding she/he is using incase they want to wee.

if you dont want matting or dont have it then i would put down a reasonable bed but nothing big and fancy like huge bankings as it wont be too dark so it will be able to see what it is doing better but it will probably have a sleep as most do. if i was to do this routine i would just have a normal bed and treat the time its in the stable during the day as night time and the field as day time although its dark :)

Ah good, now just the decision of what to use :)
Out of interest ebonyallen how long is your mare in for during the day? Im a bit worried about her being in the whole day while Im at work but not much really I can do.

naid pollyanna - She will have mats. Yes I am going to try and get used to bedding down at the opposite time for the summer :) Will be nice for her as she gets sunburn and sore eyes very easily from flies etc .

Starbucks - Yes I was thinking not a full on bed but enough to make it worthwhile actually doing on ie to soak up any wee and for her to lie on :)

Ah with mats ! yes I would still put some down - easibed maybe and don't take the wet out everyday to give her a thin base - she will be fine in for the day _ I have done it for years the time that she is out will out measure the time she is in !!

Ours usually spend their days in and nights out when I'm eventing. They all lie down, so get normal beds. Its a great system. They don't suffer as much with flies or sweet itch, there is less sugar in the grass at night, and they are there ready for you to ride (which is great for those that don't like to be caught!)

I have full rubber matting and put maybe a quarter of the floor at the back covered with a layer of shavings (started the bed with 2 bales and add 1 bale per week) - they'll be starting to go out at night and in during the day from sunday - out between 6pm and in by 7am - although to be honnest i have the same bed down in deepest darkest winter!

I have a pony who comes in for the day - partly as a companion for my TB who is still on 1/2 day turnout after an injury, and partly to control his weight.

He comes in to a proper bed - I use http://www.miscanthusbedding.co.uk/ which is fab stuff.

I bring him in to a teeny breakfast and by the time I have put my other horses out - I peek over his door and he is snuggled up on the floor fast asleep!

My lad has rubber mats and a sprinkling of shavings, tbh he doesn't go down when he's in during the day...too busy eating to stop and sleep!! He's usually found having a nap over the stable door or just waits til he's back out to snooze.

I'm actually quiet glad to see how many people bring their's in for the day!!! I do it because he needs more feed (opposite to most of your reasons!!) cos our grazing is appauling so I like him to have more hay/haylage! Also because it means he's in when I get to the yard in the evening ready to ride, he doesn't get sun burnt during the summer (haa haa!!) and he gets relief from flies and other biting things!!

Full straw bed, same as at night. I know they're going to be doing just the same things on it as they would at night (rolling, sleeping etc) so wouldn't want to reduce the amount. Ours only ever come in for a few hours if it's very hot or lots of flies about as they have very little shelter in the field. I find they mostly doze. Even a full bed only takes 5 mins to muck out, which is nice! :)

Small bed to pee and sleep on, not even 1/4 of the stable long.. Rest of my stable is rubber matted. However my mare is on this routine all winter, and summer. She is so filthy that if I give her a full stable of bed or even a half bed it would cost me double in shavings!
