and not getting any hard feed......do you bring them down for a groom/check over EVERY night?

Only asking because I usually do, but tonight I want to ride one and can't be bothered to bring the other 2 down as well cos the field is miles away ( well, not really but it is up a hill....

......Is it acceptable for me to check them over in the field and spray them with fly spray and leave 'em at it?

(say yes, say yes, say yes.......

If they need a feed or an hour chomping on some hay yes is the answer to your first question.

So long as they are checked and if they need a squirt of fly spray then I really don't think the horses are fussed where you do it, save time and do it in the field, its always good to bob a head collar on and just walk them a bit, to check for any stiffness/lame etc rather than just doing while they graze, otherwise you might miss something.

Yes I do. I bring the little one up to do 'stuff' with him but the other two are field checked when they have their tea.

i dont even bring her to the yard to ride i take the tack to her!
i have a small grooming box that i keep at the field and then ride straight from the field that saves loads of time!

I check mine in the field if I'm not bringing him in to ride. I just give a treat, make sure he has the right number of limbs/ears/eyes/nostrils/shoes etc and leave him to it!

I do and i dont, if i'm not riding or riding early then they all come in for a groom and a feed as you cant catch nervous pony in the field only in the stable, so cant brush/check him over in the field. Midget gets itchy all the time so he likes to come in and use his scratch patches in the stable and have a good scratch. If i'm riding late then only D comes in and the boys get their feed in the field, but they come in next morning to get fly sprayed checked over ect. As long as they are moving in the field then i tend not to worry.

My horse very rarely comes in. I usually check her, put on/take off fly mask and fly boots, fly spray, pick out feet etc in the field. If I ride her she gets put in the small fenced-off bit by the gateway, brushed, tacked up and off I go - nowhere near the stables and all the entirety of my grooming kit etc!
I suppose our yard works a little differently to the average yard, but funnily enough ours haven't keeled over yet from being left out and only checked from the field

Sure it is.

Some of mine come in because they are fly magnets, others are out 24/7, they never see the inside of the barn. I look them over in the morning when I hay them and again in the evening, and anytime else I happen to be passing.

My field ponies get fed in the field as well. I do bring them in for a groom and a pamper sometimes, but normally just go to them in the field for fly spray, suncream and feet picking.

Checked in the field and ridden from the field unless I have time to take her up to the yard - it's a bit of a trek. Only other reason she has to go to yard is to get her off the grass for a bit.

My absolute must dos are to hoof pick, feel the legs, do a visual check and at this time of year might also do sun cream and fly spray. I have a wee back pack with me with a headcollar, hoof pick, spray and sudocreme! If not riding I'll combine it with the dog's walk. I actually really enjoy spending time with her in her environment.

My friend and I feed ours together in the field (ie One of us does them all - no set rota, just whoever gets there 1st) and checks over and sprays them while they eat. We usually only bring in if it is terrential rain or to groom / ride. They can go weeks not leaving the field.
