If your on DIY livery... Can you help me please...

Could be scary - here goes

Livery is £91.00 a month

I use 4 small bales hay a week @ £4 each

1 -2 bales shavings (bought in bulk a few months a go at £5.50 each)

Farrier is £45 every 7 weeks

Use a bag of happy hoof each month @£12.50 + a supplement @ £30 a tub but it last for ages.

Horse is 15hh connie x, very good doer and shod only in front. Obviously lessons and any competing is extra.

Thanks for the answers. Looking at the responses looks like I would save approx £150 a month if I went DIY; it would most likely be a 3-4 month temporary arrangement before I go away with work. I would have to check if with yard if I needed to supply electric fencing (£££!) and transporting horse to new yard wouldn't be overly cheap either (I dont have any transport). ****** bit of a tough one. could end up doing loads of work for no real saving :(
 
Sorry - can't remember the reason you gave for moving in your original post, but don't forget to factor time into how much money you think you would be saving... And would you have to move the horse again when you go away for work in a couple of months?

Remember to factor in any equipment that you may not have already eg wheelbarrow, the petrol you will use going twice a day, and whether any assistance is available if you need it. For example, what will you do if you get ill or it snows and you can't get there? When I sat down and worked out costs including petrol, number of visits, and my time at minimum wage for stable 'chores' it worked out cheaper to be on part livery...if I had liked the yard - so I didn't move in the end :rolleyes:
 
Well the place I had in mind is about 1.5 miles away from my house, so fuel costs, and not being able to get there in bad weather are minor. As per post above, I've sat down and had a think about it, and I don't really think it's worth it. (I could scrounge a used wheel barrow from work to save on costs!) If I was incredibly ill next door neighbour has a horse the same village, who would look after it (we often see to her dogs for her).
