Hi Everyone.

I am in the process of purchasing a used 4x4 as a second car to tow a trailer and also a trailer (I will be doing my B + E test).

I have a 16hh2 warmbloood mare who is better travelling in a trailer the size of an ifor williams 510. She has travelled in a 505 fine, without the partition, but thought i may as well purchase a bigger trailer.

So i am currently thinking about an Ifor Williams 510 or the Bateson Deauville. This has probably been done to death before (so apologies). Does anyone have any reviews or feedback on these trailers. My mare does have arthritic hocks, so i want something that is going to give her a nice ride.

I am familiar with the 510 trailers, but not the Batesons. What size horses do you travel in them (my girl is quite a chunky girl), how do you find them to tow and any advise for someone who is buying second hand.

Thoughts on both are very much appreciated.

Many thanks

I have owned an Ifor 510 and loved it. Travelled both my 16.1 Hanoverian/tb mare in it and my 16hh Irish sports horse. Plenty of room for them and a sturdy trailer. Never had dealing with Batesons but would say the Ifors hold their value well.

I've got a Bateson. I travel my 17.3hh IDxTB in it. I take the partition out & have the full length breech & breast bars instead, without any problems. Batesons are very light. Both weightwise, so good for manouevering, & they're light & bright inside, so 'inviting' for horses to enter. As much as any enclosed space can be. I'm rubbish at towing, & don't enjoy it at all, but find towing the Bateson a marginally more pleasant experience than towing a Rice or an Ifor.

I have a bateson deauville and have towed an ifor. The Bateson is light to tow easy to manoeuvre and bright inside. My mare was 16hh so not as big as yours but she had plenty of head space. If I still had her I would have bought the full length bars as she wasn't a good traveller. However we travel my daughter's cob in it and hardly know he's there. I would try and hire one of each of possible and see which you prefer. X

Another vote for Bateson. I am on my second. I don't rate the ride on the Ifors at all. Also if you get one with barn doors then it is useful for loading things in on pallets.
