the first time this happened, i blamed myself for not having put the pin in or something. I had no partition in at the time and a single bar. Arrived at our destination to find it off on one side.

I now have my partition and thus different breech bars anyway. I definitely checked them before we left. Stupidly at the other end I didnt look in on my horse through the jockey door before unloading. As i let the side ramp down I saw hooves at head height and just jumped out of the way in time as she leapt out!! The breech bar was on the floor and she had snapped the bailer twine she was tied to. I have no idea how that breech bar came off, unless she has worked out how to unclip it herself!

Has this happened to anyone else?

Star can remove the pins by leaning on the breech bar if they are put in pointing towards the rear of the trailer.
I have to make sure that they point towards the front of the trailer.

The bar rolls a bit when she leans on it, and the ring clip seems to lift off and leave the pin open to come out.

I too thought that I hadn't put the pin in when I found her stood in the nosecone, but then when I loaded her to come home, she leaned on the bar before we set off and the pin sort of popped out.

I have a 511 and when I first had the trailer my horse managed to get the breast bar off a couple of times. I have the lynch pins:

I have learnt that I need to test the pins after I have done them up. If you can pull the chain part and the pin comes out it isn't done up properly. I can't work out what I am doing different when sometimes I can pull the pin out and sometimes they are OK.

Since doing this check before setting off the breast bar has stayed in place.

Perhaps someone else can tell me what I'm doing wrong when I can simply pull the chain to pull the pin out instead of having to unclip it by pulling the circular part back.

I hope that makes sense!

i would say that they are cheap lynch pins:eek:
we use lynch pins every day on the farm and they never come open and pop out.
if you get your finger cought when they close i can tell you it hurts:o
go to a farm or tractor dealer and buy a couple and see if they come out then.

I had this problem with a (now older style) IW, so after I'd put the pin through, I wrapped a bit of insulating tape around it,, which did the trick.

I, too, have had the breast bar become detached. I think Janette is correct. If the pin is put in facing backwards, towards the rear of the trailer, it is possible for a horse to rub against the ring and rub it downwards so releasing the pin. The pin should point forwards.

Where pins have become detached on the tractor (the stiff agricultural ones also come undone), I've replaced them with a small bolt with a self locking Nyloc nut. The trouble is, you need a couple of spanners to undo them. The electrical tape mentioned above would be a simpler solution.
