I am looking at the 505 / 510 and 506/ 511

What are peoples thoughts on the newer verses the older ones? I have 15.3 cob with a long neck, he carries his head high in trailers and I am concerned about the head height.
I know the 505 and 506 should take 2 x's 16.2 but are they different height wise. The 506 apparently has the same internal height dimensions as the 511 so I am very confused.

Having viewed several 505 I don't like how most of them are dark inside, the newer ones seem much brighter and welcoming (haha if you can say that about a trailer)
My horse is a very good loader but he is use to the taller trailers that are bright and light inside.
Any one have any good/ bad experiences with these?
Thanks!

I have a new 511, I part exchanged my old 505 because I now have a 16.3 WB and the 505 was a bit of a squeeze for him. Re. the darkness my trailer has windows in the side as well as the front unlike the old ones. Having said that, my 16.1 TB fitted in the 505 no problem but with the 511 I can get them both in.Sorry not being much help am i!!

If you're concerned about the head height then its better to go bigger and the 511 is very roomy. I prefer my newer 511 compared to the 510, although I was very happy with that too.

505 is the old 510 and 506 is the old 511 so the 506 will be bigger than the 505. I'm not sure how it compares to the 511 though as just have a 403!

I think the 505 is the old 506 and 510 is the old 511.
My 510 is light inside. It's the 'classic' model so maybe that makes a difference.

I much prefer the 511s, I like to watch my horse through the front window and I like the extra ventilation of sliding front windows. Both 510 and 511 feel very sturdy. Mine wouldn't fit in a 505.

I've had a few 505s, a 510 and getting a 506 minute on Friday (OH likes buying and selling the odd trailer so I never get too attached). I prefer the older 505s and 510s as they see more solid and better built than the newer versions of the same models. Panels etc are better. I now only travel a 15.1 now so wouldn't have a 510 or 511 as I prefer smaller for towing, but 505s are quite snug if you have 2 horses. Some of the newer 505s have windows and therefore more light. If you travel one you can get the full breast bar and remove the centre partition which will give you more space and light?

Not quite! The 505 is the old 506 and the 510 is the old 511.

My very reliable, knowledgeable trailer servicing man says he would go for a late (about 2007) 505/510 over the newer models every time. He says the build quality is much better and the 'Classic' model with the lockable jockey door (more because you can open it from the inside than because you can lock it!) is the best horse trailer IW have ever made. I'd always go for the bigger model whether your horse will fit on a 505 or not - you never know if you're going to get a bigger horse in future or if your horse is going to want the extra space whilst travelling. A friend's 15.1 Section D is terrible on a 505 but fine on a 510. It also allows more space for things like a tack pack if you want one in future.

i travel 2 16+ horses in a 505 and never had any hassle. If i'm eventing i still in the full breast bar so he has more space during the day. i think the older 505s are more solid, and i haven;t seen a newer box i'd swop it for. I got extra windwos panels put into my 505 very cheaply and I wouldn't swop it for the world. They are good classic boxes.

I had a 505 which I loved but changed to the 510 because I had a very big horse, I have windows in front and sides so it is not dark at all. I think the new 511 is slightly bigger that the old 510 so would be very roomy for your horse.

I had a rented 510 which constantly snaked and overturned on the A1, nightmare, thankfully everyone, people and ponies were okay and insurance paid up. It was a 2008 model and this happened in 2011 so it wasnt old, the rental company claimed it was regularly serviced, I believe them.
I then bought my own a brand new 506 (2012). Its lovely and light, especially as I use it without the partition and have a full length breast and breech bar. (you must use 2 full length bars to keep the trailer stable when departitioned). It is taller and v slightly wider than the old 505. I love it and it has never ever snaked.

I have a friend who's just bought a 506 which was only a few months old; she purchased it secondhand.

My understanding of what has happened is that the fastening/pin which holds the bar on the back where the horse's bum sits (sorry can't remember name, having a Fifty-Plus moment LOL, is it the "rear breech bar"??) has snapped. My understanding was that this happened with nothing more substantial than a 13.2 pony.

This is someone who is an experienced professional person who has transported a lot of different horses & ponies and has a working knowledge of different trailers, i.e. not an amateur!

IFOR have said that as she bought the trailer from someone else i.e. secondhand, and not direct from them, they are not going to do anything about it or honour any guarantees/warranties: never mind that there is patently not only a design issue here but also a serious safety one too.

I will see if I can copy her into this thread; I don't know if she is "on" this forum or not.

The 506 is slightly longer inside than the 505 - I was comparing them the other day. We've a 16.1 on the passport but is clearly about 16.3 now warmblood who loves her 505 trailer - she's a skinny sort with long legs, so just fits it but can get in and out very easily as she is so slim.
The difference is the front bodywork appears to be sitting further forward onto the A frame, so you gain about six inches inside at the front beyond the breach bars, just makes the whole thing a tad more roomy. So may well suit your long necked horse. It also was possinly a fraction taller - was difficult to check. Our 505 is the 2007ish Classic model mentioned above with the lock on the trailer door that opens from isnide, a window to the front and one on each side pane; at the top, so quite light. Ours has the curved mudguards that dip down between the wheels (the older model was a straight mudguard)

I've got a 505 it's a great trailer but my 15.2 mare is a bit of a tight fit length-wise. I'm thinking about getting full length bars so I can remove the partition to give her a bit more room. Eventually I will probably get a 506 as they do seem to be a bit bigger. I don't think I'd go for a 511 as they just seem ginormous.
