Thinking about buying a 3.5 ton box but don't really like the van conversions as they just seem a bit small so am looking at the iFor Williams based boxes or similar with the rear load and side unload and forward facing.

So where is the best place to look for one? Haven't got a massive budget - about £3500 if I was to get one - and I don't expect it to be all fancy and painted up as can do that myself. I also am not fussed about any living area

So again, best place to look? Am in Devon but dont mind travelling to get it as dad lives in Surrey anyway.

TIA x

You see ones like this on Ebay all the time....

A word of warning though - they are often on ford Transit/iveco chassis which make the ramps very steep and often give a rolling motion to the ride. They can also be quite heavy so you are less likely to get the payload you would with a van.

I have owned a transit conversion and a renault master van conversion - I much prefer the van conversion. It is low loading, the horses seem happier and I have more payload.

Anyhow, just some thoughts and good luck in your search!

I saw an Ifor Williams 'container' mounted on a transit chasis arrive at a venue a while back. I saw the driver turn the vehicle round & I honestly though that it was going to tip over. The role on it was incredible. The big problem with them is that the centre of gravity is far too high on them & they are terribly unstable. I would never use one/buy one. :(

I used to regualrly use a van conversion and although I loved it I feel the angle for a slightly bigger horse is a bit sharp when getting up the ramp, though absolutley fine for 14.2. Plus the decent ones I like are way too much out of my budget haha.

Does anyone know of any makes/modles that have a rear load and side unload? Or similar? I guess then other option is a trailer but at my age the overall costs would be far greater than a small box, with insurance and running costs of towing vehicle as well as taking trailer test etc.

The issue with Ifor Williams containers is that they are designed to be fitted to transits which have a high centre of gravity which means a steep ramp but that they are also unstable especially going round corners.. They are o.k. for Shetland Ponies but not anything else.

Most containers are either fitted with rear ramps or side ramps but not both as it reduces the payload that you can carry.

In your area Winterbourne Horseboxes would be worth a try to see if they have something suitable.
