I’m planning to buy a second hand trailer early in the New Year and I’m wondering what people’s experiences are of these two? I need the size for my 17.1hh horse, which is limiting my options.

There’s an Equitrek Trail Trekka L for sale locally, which looks really nice, but I’ve heard people say that they wouldn’t touch an Equitrek because of the poor built quality. I also wonder what it would be like to tow, given that I believe it’s lighter than the Ifor Williams, which is what I’d originally planned to get.

Any general advice on things to consider when second hand trailer shopping would also be gratefully received.

i’ve had a trail treka and a 505, they both felt the same to tow to me in all fairness. the trail treka was definitely not as sturdy, when i took it to the mechanic he said i never shouldve sold my ifor williams🤣 one of them preferred the trail treka which is why i got it, the other one absolutely hated it because the floor is so much higher.

i took the partition out of the 505 but still found it easier to tack up etc in the equitrek, the rug racks at the back are helpful and the box over the wheel in front of the horse is a handy place to chuck things haha.

if you can find an equitrek that’s already had panels etc replaced i’d go for that, otherwise still with ifor williams for build quality.

equitrek no longer make trail treka’s because they can’t get hold of the panels/parts, i was quoted over 1k for the panel where the tack locker is, and it would’ve been white not black, from equitrek. worth keeping in mind for the trail treka in particular, when i sold mine i spoke to a lady who had ended up with 4 of them because she was having to strip them for parts to maintain the 1 she used!

A friends 17.2hh TB has been in my Trail Trekka L and a another friends 511. He appeared to have more headroom in the 511, but to measure there is not much in it.

He carries his head very "up".

If he was to stretch his head forward more there is a bit more room in the TrailTrekka L.
You can also very easily change the angle/position of the central partition if only towing 1 horse to give more or less room.

To tow the TrailTrekka is a bit bouncy empty but tows beautifully loaded.
I have one as had a horse who preffered side loading to rear loading (wouldn't get in 511).

With the panels on the Trail Trekka you can get the front panels & ramp replaced by a qualified trailer/caravan mechanic (not by equitrek) with black buffalo board (which is marine ply, the same density & thickness as original panels and waterproof). Replacing the back and long side will be very tricky as you cant buy 1 piece that size.

Thanks both, that’s very helpful. I like the design of the Equitrek, but it does seem that build quality may be a worry. And if it’s a hassle to replace panels, that’s not good.

My chap has travelled in a 511 before, so I know that’s no problem for him.
