Perhaps Im being naive here but when I took out Insurance with Tesco for Diesel & Darcy I asked when I get Diesel neutered would my premium be reduced and the answer was yes.

Ive just rung to inform them of this fact and they said it wont affect my premuim until next year when its due for renewal. Now I wasnt told this when I took out my policy and feel they are taking the Mick.

I also said he was microchipped at the same time and they said this does not effect the policy now or later.

My friend who is also with Tesco and her spayed bitch is the same age as mine and has never made a claim has her Insurance up for renewal and the premium has almost doubled.

Sorry for the rant but am I living in cloud cuckoo land and would you have assumed the same as me.

I have come to the conclusion that insurance companies will do anything to hang on to your money. I am currently waiting for mine to phone me back after I queried something on my horse renewal. Daughter suggested I check 23 year old pony was still covered for colic surgery (the main reason we keep her covered tbh), and was told probably not as she is a veteran! The girl on the phone then said she needed to check as it was a standard not veteran policy and would get back to me. I will not be impressed if this is the case and have been paying for the last 4 years for something I wasn't covered for!

If they'd said it reduces the premium I would have assumed it reduced it from when the change was applied as well. Although it's insurance isn't it? So stands to reason they'd want to avoid lowering your premium until a later date, the oiks

(I'm a little bitter at the moment, having been informed this week my car insurance would go up by £200 despite the fact I've never claimed *grumble grumble* thank god for comparison websites).

Wonder if they will try to up your premium on renewal like they have for your friend, despite the neutering

A lot of insurance is completely worthless and I have a good friend, owns two horses and in the insurance business himself and he doesn't insure his horses because he thinks it is a waste of money. There is that view.
I myself have mine insured and I use a company who does pay out as its policy states. I have no idea if its rates are competitive, probably not, but I think the very low cost policies are probably useless. It is currently paying for a neurectomy on my horse.
A few years ago I used one company which shall remain nameless - although it is two capital letters separated by an "and" sign - and they were pretty bad. I guess the moral of the story is there aint no such thing as a free lunch!

Thanks for the replies guys.

A friend has suggested I write to them stating the facts and how upset I am, worth a try the only thing Ive got to lose is the stamp.

MM did you hear back about your daughters Pony?

I think they are a lot of legalized crooks and when my policy is up for renewal I will request everything in writing before I decide who gets my money.

I'm still waiting to hear from them. I have a feeling they are frantically picking straws to see who gets the job of telling me I have been paying for the last 4 years for cover I didn't have.

I bet you arent covered. ;)

Third party fire and theft after 15...would you like me to steal him?:D

I'm guessing you signed a year long contract with them? I'm something of a cynic when it comes to things like this as legally they usually have you tied up with small print the second you put your name and credit card details against the contract. I would have thought that you will probably receive a "computer says no" type answer when you try to present them with facts and logic - especially as this is Tescos we're talking about (not renowned for their customer services).

Sorry for the negative post - I do hope I am wrong as thing like this frustrate the hell out of most people.

I'm happy to eat humble pie and say NFU have called me back and confirmed the old nag IS covered for vets fees including colic surgery. Apparently this is because they are on a standard policy rather than a veteran one. I have a feeling someone may have slipped up somewhere by not changing them on to a veteran policy and at next renewal things may be different, but for now I am actually feeling quite benevolent towards and insurance company. Still bl**** expensive though!

Mine is on veteran with NFU but what was not made clear at the time, is that vet cover is ONLY for accidental and external injuries.

Still after being cross when I thought about it.. I would not put a 22 yr horse through surgery anyway but it does mean I wouldnt be covered for say, injections if she became arthritic. Oh well, my nievity showing.

thats standard behaviour. Whats even worse is then often, when I have then gone back on comparsion websites, I find that my current insurer is offering a much better deal. I have also now found a new clause which they try to sweep under the carpet - which is to automatically renew. I always make them put it in writing that I do NOT have to automatically renew for a further year.,

Did you start with yours on veteran cover or was she moved over to it? I still have a sneaky feeling ours have sneaked through somehow.

Re putting a 22 year old thro surgery, I think it very much depends on the horse. I have a 19 year old with Cushings, and she is no longer insured because I would not consider putting her through surgery. However the 23 year old acts more like a 5 year old, and as my daughter is in her 5th year at Liverpool Vet Uni she knows how good the care is and which type of horse copes well with the surgery and convalescence, and which doesnt. Of course there is far more than that to consider if god forbid the situation ever arises, but fingers crossed it won't.
