just sending off for my provisional, and not sure whether i need to tick the cat C or the cat C1??
Just read on the net that cat C1 is for vehicles 3.5-7.5ton and the test is taken in a smaller vehicle, and the cat C test is for any rigid LGV vehicle (does this mean HGV?)
as ive read today the HGV has been replaced with LGV (large goods vehicles!)
its confused the hell out of me!
to be honest i only want to drive up to 7.5ton, so should i just do the cat C1?
ive probably answered my own question, but im worried im applying for the wrong thing!

From what i understand the C1 test and C test are the same just with different weight restrictions, so if you're looking to do your test you might as well do the C then you're covered for up to 10 tonne (i think.) and wont have to worry in the future should you need to go over 7.5ton...

thanks suffolkangel, all the websites are saying cat C, i just dont think ill ever drive over 7.5ton, so wondered if it would be worth taking the cat C1 (as its in a smaller lorry apparently on test day).
i need to send off for my provisional today, so need to get it sorted and clear in my head!
thanks again

Hmmmm, I'd also be interested to see the answer to this one! I've been reading up on this too, and thought that the C and C1 were taken in different vehicles. There seems to be some overlap with the C1 test with ambulances - I'm not sure if they're separate tests (ie a different test to pass to drive an ambulance to driving any other vehicle up to 7.5 tonnes) but the C1 ambulance test is taken in an ambulance sized vehicle (guess that's pretty obvious!). I'd much prefer to take the test in that sized vehicle as I'm never going to buy an enormous lorry.

just called my local training centre (apex) and he has advised the C1 if i know i never want to drive over 7.5ton (which i dont!!!).
the cat C gives you full entitlement to any size lorry (this is the new HGV test), it would be nice to have everything on my licence, but to be honest i will never want nor need a HGV box.
so sending off for my provisional C1 licence! :-)

Do you have to sit a different driving test for a horse box than a car? Cant you use the same one. My daughter wants to compete on her horse in two years and i thought my driving lisence was fine.:(

If you passed your driving test pre 1997 then your fine, you already have the cat C1 entitlement, if you passed after the 01.01.1997 then you do have to sit another test, unless you only want to drive up to 3.5 ton.

I took category C1, meant I got to do the test in a Merc Sprinter van, which is a good bit smaller than the rigid lorry you have to drive for Cat. C, I'm never going to want to drive a full HGV and we couldn't have one as that would mean my parents would have to take the extra test to drive it anyway.
Hope this helps :)

where did you do your C1? the test centre near me still does the test in a lorry! would love to take it in a van! might have a chance of passing then!
