a comment on the video
- 'an amazing display of scope - just such a shame if is so obviously due to experiences of rapping, ect. '
am I being really dumb ? Can someone explain what 'rapping ' is ?
Have heard it in conversation before but I just nod and pretend I know what I'm on about

Rapping is where someone stands by a jump and when the horse goes over it they lift the pole higher to make sure the horse hit's itself. Other variations include a thin metal pole that is difficult to be seen placed higher than the jump pole.

Rapping the horses legs with the pole as it jumps. You would be surprised how many "professional" yards do this

Is it a popular training method ? Here or in Germany etc ??

I have heard of a few yards with good SJ riders doing this in my area. Have also noticed horses being a bit sloppy one week, and then giving the fences a foot of air the next week...hhmmm

Paul Schockemöhle was filmed rapping his horses by a German TV channel in the early 1990's. Not sure if he was ever fined or anything, but it certainly brought this horrific practice to light over here. I daresay it still goes on in training yards here, much like in UK, but clearly, no one would ever openly admit to doing it.......

There are variations on the theme, Irish riders have been accused of using the method where you belt the horse's fetlocks - before it goes in the ring - with either a broom handle, or a bamboo pole, this makes the horse's feet hurt like hell if it touches a fence ...
