My cob used to be used for driving when he was 3 (he is 13 now), allegedly he was good at it and enjoyed it but was far too strong to make it enjoyable for the driver.

Do horses have memories that go back 10 or so years? The reason i ask is that when he see's a horse and cart on the road he gets terribly excited and tries to run off after it. He does not do this with ridden horses or other vehicles, only horse and carts

Could he possibly have recollections of his driving days?

yup ive had my old mare 10 years and have never hunted her, the guy previously had her 2 years and never hunted her. they hunt foot beagles near me and if she can hear the horn or hounds she goes mad! even if they're not in sight!

My old horse had moved around a lot but within just a few miles radius. I could always tell the places he'd previously lived, as he'd try to take me through the gates years and years later when we were out hacking.

There was one place he'd only ever gone to for gruelling riding lessons (he wasn't keen on hard work ) and he wouldn't try to go in there, in fact he'd avert his eyes and go past at a spanking trot whether I wanted to trot or not!

Yes, they do definately remember. Manni used to live with a dark dapple grey horse. About 2 years after he moved to me we went to a show where there was a large dapple grey, and Manni couldn't take his eyes off of him! he kept whinneying to the horse, but as it was not the same one, it did not reply. I kind of felt sorry for Manni :(

I kept a mare for 5 years on a livery yard and then she went away on loan for 3 years. when she came home, she got off the lorry and marched her way straight back to her old loosebox.

As your pony seems to be so excited about seeing traps/carriages and you were told he was too strong to drive comfotably, I don't think you should try it!

LOL!

Oh yes they remember very well!
The late Henesy used to try and take me into the driveway of our old house every time we rode past. It would make me feel a bit sad as we were all very happy there.
Also I had a mare on loan for 2 years and had an amazing bond with her. She went back to her owner whilst I was pregnant - and came back to me 2 years later. When she saw me she whinnied and ran straight to me. She genuinely looked so pleased to see me. That was a lovely moment.
