I recently went to a sale and felt sorry for a in foal mare who was 19 yrs old and been a broodmare for years and wasn't in the best off condition to say the least. Anyway I watched the horses go through than she came in with head held low and so sort off withdrawn into herself so my hand sort off kept going up, I couldn't stop it. I'm now a proud owner off a 16.2hh ID who will be having her foal and than live a life off retirement with me with plenty off tlc.
Iv always wanted to have a foal but couldn't justify putting my mare in foal and adding to the mass off other horses so this seemed a good idea. I'm so excited but also scared in case things go wrong. I know I'm gona cry when the foal is born :)
anyway a few questions, she's got 3 months left. Un known worming history so how do I go about that? Worm count as I don't want to upset her by worming and she gets colic.
No scan has been done so I'm guessing I will just have to wait with fingers xd now as it would be to late to do anything now anyway should there be twins.
Also it's crossed my mind that maybe if she's ok afterward and takes to riding weather a bit off light hacking would be ok or just let her live out her retirement as my orginal plan.
I'm so excited :)

Oh well done you, but wow, what a baptism of fire :)

No advice, but sounds like you have got it all sorted , pictures please.

Os if she is fit and healthy then I see no reason why a bit of light hacking would be a problem, and she will probably enjoy the change if activity.

My partner thinks I'm mad but I'm on a high. I'm use to handling weaned foals but iv always wanted to see it through from birth onwards.
I have no idea what she's in foal to, better not be a Shetland |o|
feet being done next week they are awful so long and cracked up but I'm on the case.
And best bit is I only paid £200

Oh bless her, lucky she found you by the sounds of it, pics are a must :D
Good luck with her, and as MW says, I reckon she would be fine for light hacking as long as she seems fit and well, dont forget 'Over to you' was at badders age 19 ;)

well done you. dont try to feed her up too much as it will result in a huge foal and still poor mare! feed just above maintenance level and ad lib hay/haylege til foaled, then you can to up her bucket grub!

Well done you for taking her on, sounds like her and her little one will have a great home with you :) We need lots of photos of her, and when the foalie arrives in a few months, photos are mandatory ;) Good luck!

I am sure you will google the hell out of the internet anyway, but you will need to make sure her jabs are up to date - don't expect she has any though! You only have 3 months left but if you get the vet out now he might be able to give you an better approx date. You should give booster jabs within a month of birth. Speak to a good feed manufacturer like dodson and horrel or spillers they are wonderful and will give you masses of advice.

Best of luck! Oh, and photos - lots of them please!

Well done :D

Hope all goes very well :D

I have no experience of horses pregnancies, only dogs, so cannot offer any advice.

Makes me more frustrated that we don't yet have any land. With four at livery I can't afford any more, not without heading for the divorce courts anyway!

Looking forward to updates and pictures :D
