Dear M.E.N

I'd just like to write a plea to Manchester's road users. I own a Horse and regularly ride out. Unfortunately having moved from My hometown of Canterbury, Kent up to Salford the lack of bridle paths is terrible. It even seems all the footpaths have to be concreted to save town folk putting on a pair of wellington boots! The nature trail is a good 40 min walk from our farm along a very busy road. No horse rider enjoys unnecessary road work, to be honest its too terrifying for most to risk it. Horses are unpredictable animals and having braved the road for the first time on saturday i received abuse from many road users who thought I shouldn't be on the road. Some drivers passed my horse so closely the bigger vehicles we're almost catching my leg, the reason we ride two a-brest is so drivers have to overtake us otherwise they squeeze past. We don't want to be on the roads so id just like to ask people on the somewhat rare occasion you pass a horse out riding please pass wide and slow it only takes a few minutes of your time. Also id like to ask other horse riders to ensure they are polite and thank other road users for slowing down for them.

how does that sound? im sending it to the manchester evening news!!

commments and anythinbg i should add pls before i send it

V.good. Just spell check it first ;p
A very good point about asking other horse riders to be courteous. Nothing grieves me more than after years of bullying my family and friends into driving wide and slow past a horse they get no thanks...infact several times the riders have not even put their phones down!
I would also mention that the two abreast is actualy done for the safety of the driver too as om many occasions the inside horse is a youngster.

Excellent - just a few spelling/punctuation mistakes:

It seems that even the footpaths have to be concreted over to save townfold from putting on a pair of wellington boots! The nature trail is a good 40 minute walk from out farm along a very busy road. Some drivers passed my horse so closely that the bigger vehicles were almost catching my leg. The reason we ride two abreast is so that drivers have to give us plenty of room when they overtake us, otherwise they squeeze past. We do not want to be on the roads so I would just like to ask people on the somewhat rare occasions you pass a horse on the road, please pass wide and slow. It only takes a few minutes of your time. Also, I would like to ask other horseriders to ensure that they are polite and thank other road users for slowing down for them.

Hope it gets printed in the paper.

I'd just like to write a plea to Manchester's road users. I own a Horse and regularly ride out. Unfortunately having moved from my hometown of Canterbury, Kent up to Salford the lack of bridle paths is terrible, even Clifton Marina is 80% inaccessible to horse riders for reasons unknown to myself. It even seems all the footpaths have to be concreted to save town-folk putting on a pair of Wellington boots! The nature trail is a good 40 min walk from our farm along the very busy Manchester Road. No horse rider enjoys unnecessary roadwork, to be honest its too terrifying for most to risk it. Horses are unpredictable animals and having braved the road for the first time on Saturday I received abuse from many road users who thought I shouldn't be on the road. Some drivers passed my horse so closely the bigger vehicles we're almost catching my leg, the reason we ride two a-Brest is so drivers have to overtake us otherwise they squeeze past also the horse on the inside usually is inexperienced or has a nervous rider. It is illegal for us to ride on the pavement, and obviously no-one wants horse poo on the pavements either!!
We don't want to be on the roads it’s a worry every time we HAVE to use them so id just like to ask people on the somewhat rare occasion you pass a horse out riding please pass wide and slow it only takes a few minutes of your time.
Also id like to ask other horse riders to ensure they are polite and thank other road users for slowing down for them.

So smile and give us a wave!

Many thanks

this??

This sort of message needs sending again and again. I had a letter published in our local paper saying exactly the same thing.

Well done, I hope they publish

Actually it's 'two abreast' (abreast is one word, not two)!

And I would say that passing wide and slow only takes a few SECONDS of a driver's time - not minutes!

Otherwise - please see Jaylen's spelling and punctuation corrections!

Good idea to write to papers about this - well done!

I think I must ride in the same area as you, well done and thanks for the letter. Im lucky, I can get on the bridleway without going on a road from our yard but it would be nice to change our route some times instead of having to come back the same way we go out. This would involve some although little road work but its just not safe to do so. The road that effects us is dangerous, they drive so fast we just dont risk it.

Just off Ringley Road, we can drop down on to the nature trail. Have rode in Clifton Marina many times a few years ago as used to be able to get through near Pilkington tiles. Where you based?

My mare was hit by a wagon on chorley rd in manchester (only very lightly- no physical harm done) the driver was passing slowly thank god, my friend was on her I was behind on EB (we both have done the riding road safety test which I think all riders should do), I asked him to stop as I could see her tensing up as she could hear the air brakes of the wagon, he didnt stop but did slow down and she spooked just as he got near (my friend was doing her best to leg yield her towards the pavement so she could see it but is scared her and he just stopped on time at her bum! My heart nearly jumped out of my chest! I was behind on an exracer who wasn't bothered in the slightest.

He pulled up and my friend got off and trotted her up to see if she was lame, she was fine (tough as old boots my mare is!)

he got out and was very sorry, I said I had asked him to stop but at least he was going slow, luckily no harm was done so I just asked him to tell his lorry friends to be carefull too.

If he had ignored me compleatly like some drivers do they both would have been killed, im sure of it!

Since then Zara has panic attacks on busy roads so we stay well clear (she had been ok before but his breaks were echoing near a bridge so wrong place at the wrong time)

louby, where abouts in ringly are you and can you get straight on to the nature trail off your yard with out going on that busy road?

I want to move her in summer to get her fit but need somewhere I dont have to go on a busy road
