I'm not sure how to present my appaloosa pony?

Hi,
I have a 14.1, leopard appaloosa, lightweight cob. He's really evenly coloured, white with black round spots, about the size of a 5 pence piece. His mane and tail are thick and long and neither white nor black but more silvery.
His legs have a fair amount of feather, sort of a chestnut/light bay colour... I've never seen anything like it before and this means I don't really know how I should show him.

He's not a registered appaloosa as he's a rescue so I have no papers.

Should I clip him? Do I leave his feathers on? What about his mane and tail?

Just any comments would be greatly appreciated!

It depends what classes you want to show him in! At local level it probably won't matter very much in say odd coloured or best condition classes. If you wanted to step up a bit and do say an amateur championship such as chiltern and thames rider he would probably look smarter pulled/clipped/plaited. You could also register him as a part bred appy (no breeding needed, just spots!) and then I think you can do their part bred classes.

Thanks, yeah, I've done small level classes such as coloureds and he usually comes 5th out of about 7...
What if I want to do a bit more jumping etc?
And I will certainly get him registered as a part-bred; I didn't realize you could!

I can't see them, sorry... Probably to do with privacy settings?

I have a 14hh spotty chap...not a hairy one. I plait his mane and leave his tail natural for showing / hunting.

I can't see your photos, so I'm going by your description of him.

You need to differentiate between breed, type and colour. Appaloosas are a breed, there are other breeds that have the LP (spotty) gene such as Knabstruppers and British Spotted Ponies.

You pony is a cob type. We don't know where he got the LP gene from as you don't know his breeding. So I would turn him out as a cob. The choice is between hogging, clipping the feather and pulling the tail like a show cob, or leaving him natural with flowing mane, tail and feather and show him Traditional style.

You will have to look at him to decide which would suit him best. If you can get a photo to show on this thread, I'm sure that people would let you know which would suit him.

Yeah, okay thanks, I 'm not sure how to post a picture?

on facebook, if you right click on your image and click copy image url, this will be a code that ends .jpg

paste that code on here and put
at either end and the pic should show regardless of whether it is private or not on fb.

^^ ok on flickr you need to go to 'share' then grab html/bb code- you want the BB code and you need the bit that has the img tags either side of it

Personally, I would pull/clip etc but that's just me and the fact I strongly dislike feathers! He looks really nice all flowy and natural :) Suits him nicely but for jumping I think pulling/clipping feathers might be smarter?

I think it is personal preference and what classes you want to show him in. You could clip feathers off and pull mane and plait to go into hunter classes as well as spotted classes or you could leave him natural and go onto cob classes. He has that amount of bone where you could easily do either.

Look at his fore legs - they look back at the knee in this photo and removing the feather will emphasise this. I personally feel that keeping him turned out as a traditional cob shows him off to his best.
