OK, brief(ish) rundown; was unhappy at Old Yard; school was crap, feed occasionally ran out, other liveries pure unadulturated evil and ignorance, but I WAS pretty much my own boss and PF was looked after the way I liked. I also trust grooms totally and it is by MILES the cheapest yard around.
Moved to Current Yard because the facilities were better; school is brilliant, as are jumps and care of horses seemed to be excellent. Even though much more expensive than Old Yard, seemed it might be worth it (not least because of the less hassle involved in getting horse to a show) However, livery went up to 'ridiculous' and I can't afford to compete. Also grooms are slack and have already had run ins with them due to state of beds, they've said I have to bring PF myself in the afternoon, and are totally anal about her being anything but show-clean when I ride.
Sick of the Dictatorial Regime and lowering standards I decided to move (at the end of the month) to Former Instructor's yard which is mid-price between 2 yards, but rather far and out of my way. Also worth mentioning is that I have to get there on my motorbike and it's still very cold here! AND I have issues with the beds (again!) although I could probably bust a few nuts and would get what I want eventually. I'd have a very good instructor on site and lots more social opportunities.
NOW, I've just been told that a stable has come available at Old Yard (this is incidentally where I also teach and ride Antifaz) I'd have to move in ASAP so it isn't occupied and I'd lose the rest of the month's rent at current yard. I can live with that though.
Thing is... am I just forgetting how sh:t Old Yard was??? I mean, I'm under no illusions that there is a total turd (am I allowed to say turd??) there who has got it in for me and I know the food runs out, but its SO cheap that I can afford to get extra food in an emergency. I know it's a pain in the butt to have to get up at 4am to feed and hack PF down to the gate on show days, but it's not that often. Security is also very good, so no chance of PF getting pinched.
Perhaps I'm actually appreciating Old Yard having experienced the others... Oh, forgot to mention that I could pay for occasional use of Current Yard's school and hack to it from Old Yard...
What do you think?

I know the old yard seemed pretty bad at the time, but now you have seen that the grass isn't necessarily greener on the other side maybe you will be able to cope with the little niggles there. If they are telling you there is a box available I guess somebody wants you back there, so it isn't all bad.
Was your horse happy at the yard there? That would be the big question for me and a major factor in my decision making. I haven't read all your posts recently but weren't you planning on breeding - can they accommodate that wherever you choose to go ?

Was your horse happy at the old yard? If so, I'd go back there. Don't be put off by some upstart with a grudge - just practise tuning the muppets out. Livery yards change - owners leave, new people arrive and dynamics change so you never know when toss face might just emigrate.

PF was very happy at Old Yard. Actually... she seems fine at this yard too, but I can't help the niggling feeling that she doesn't get the care she should (starting with the beds) I was thinking of breeding PF but that sort of went out of the window with the VAST expense of keeping her at current yard...
At Old Yard breeding could be an option again, and it won't matter if the school is rubbish if she's going to be pregnant and when it comes time to foal, Former Instructor's yard has stud facilities.

From your rundown main probs with old yard appear to be:
Not as great facilities - solved by renting current yard's facilities.
Not enough food - solved by fact that it is cheaper so could buy in your own if need be.
Liveries are a pain in the rear end - solved by ignoring them if need be (not a great option but some liveries can be a pain everywhere, appears to be the norm in most yards, and do you know all the liveries in instructor's yard to know it will not be same case there?)
You know the grooms are o.k at Old yard and that it is secure.

Only questions remaining to me are - can you get good instruction at old yard and can you move to old instructor's place if the move back to old place doesn't work out?

From the tone of your post it appears you have decided anyway...looks like old yard to me

Hope my post made sense - sometimes only I understand myself!

Need a bit of encouragement after all I've grumbled about Old Yard

Can get excellent tuition at Current Yard (can't afford it at the mo, what with livery costs being what they are!) and it's within hacking distance.
Could certainly move to Former Instructor's yard in the future if Old Yard gets me down again.

Yes, PF was very happy there, and I didn't stress about her feed (except when it ran out!) or bed AT ALL.
I could probably avoid going to yard at all when the Bad Man is there (sat and sun afternoons)... He really is (and I'm not exaggerating) a horrible, horrible person...

Better the Devil you know?

I know PF is the most important, but really, you have to be happy with things too.

Good Luck.

I'm sure there will be more livery places come up at old yard in the future. I think its worth trying ex trainers yard before going back to old yard. I don't think trying one yard give you enough expierence to say grass isn't greener and you should be greatful of your yard. As my sig says if you were happy I don't believe you would of moved in the first place.

Weeeeel. You have been seeming a bit wistful about Old Yard on occasion, though that has been tempered by rants about Awful Livery there.
I would say "Go back", but I do remember you saying that your tenure there is not secure? And you could be thrown out because you don't live there?

All in all, though, if you are not filled with dread at the thought of going back, and PF would be happy and well looked after, I would say go back. If you have the choice of going to your Uncle's yard if things don't work out, you can't really lose at this juncture.

And I am agog for stories about Awful Livery, and how he eventually gets his comeuppance!

I would go back too.

Unless you think old instructors yard woudl really be better?

If you arent sure it wil be, then I think its better to take PF back to what she knows, rather than move her again to old instructors yard, only to find you may have to move from there again if its not as good as it sounds.

ALL yards have bad and good to them, does a yard exist that matches your requirements? You need to weigh up the pros and cons between the three yards and decide which isssues you can deal with most easily. As I understand it the old yard has stupid/annoying people, the new yard is too far away and the current yard is too expensive? There is nothing you can do about the price & dstance issues but you CAN ignore the idiots and make sure you have food in case they run out.

No, I'm not really secure there, but if I WERE to get kicked out (they'd have a battle on their hands!) I could yet go to Former Instructor's yard. I'm a bit more secure now that I have pupils there and the parents support me. Also, if I put PF in foal and don't even need a school, there are one or two other places I could take her..
I know it won't be perfect, but there's a certain comfort in knowing what I'll be getting for my money as opposed to Former Instructor's yard where I'd have to nag a groom into shape...

I can certainly do my best to avoid the idiots by riding during the week and in the morning at weekends.
