A few years ago I aquired a labrador from my OH's sister and brother in law. They had owned him since a pup but as he grew bigger and more boisterous, they got fed up with him and he was left outside in the yard 24/7 with no exercise or training and got fatter and fatter. He is a very sweet dog and was very obviously frightened of the brother in law. I got my husband to ask them if they would rehome him to us. They were happy to rehome him to me as they did not want him going to a rehoming centre, but admitted he was not getting the care and attention that he needed. I have given this dog the best life that I could and they never ask after him.

Then about 2 years ago the brother in law arrived home one day with a Jack Russell puppy. He was the centre of attention for a while and the kids could walk him because he was smaller. However after a short time Buster also found himself thrown out into the yard and all walks and playtime stopped.

Just last night I was told by my mother-in-law that they have now got a German Shepherd puppy! When we got Ben from them he didn't even know how to play or chase a ball. I can't bear the thought of them ruining yet another dog but I am powerless!

Don't know what I can do????? :(

Can't you get your OH to talk to them? Seems very selfish of them! Why do they keep choosing different breeds? They sound like they haven't got a clue and the rescue centres will no doubt be left to be pick up the pieces! Cx

Not sure what you can do but I wouldn't be able to keep my mouth shut I'd have to say something !

People we rehomed our springer from then had a jack russel, who ended up where our dog's sister is with my OH's friend, I couldn't believe it

Ah, a bored, understimulated GSD will soon learn to create it's own fun and they will know all about it, best start warning them now and hopefully find the dog a new home before the damage is done...

i was in a similar situation with my brother, him and an ex of his bought a jack russel x, was their "baby" when he was a pup, when he grew up having had no training he became boistrous and yappy, so they went and bought another pup, as they were both lazy and thought nothing of going to bed at 11pm and not getting up till 3pm the next day obviously the dogs had to go to the toilet in the house, they got tired of clearing up the mess so said they had bought a run for the garden, i popped round one day and found out the dog run was in fact a rabbit hutch! after a lot of shouting and his ex storming off in tears i left with the dogs and refused to give them back, the pup went to his exes aunt (an experienced dog owner who thinks the world of her animals) the jack russel has stayed with my mum an dad but often jumps in my car to spend the night at my house with my dog. i was lucky that myself and brother were at the age were our dad having a go at him stopped him from getting another dog.

i feel for you in your situation as its awful being powerless when it comes to the treatment of animals, have known friends who knew of the mistreatment of other peoples horses who put a complaint in to RSPCA, sometimes this can help? even just to make the owner realise what they're doing is wrong.

i do hope it works out for you

That's what I was thinking! Not sure if they realise that. I have boxers so I know about crazy dogs!!! I just hate the way people get dogs and when they get bored of them they expect others to pick up the pieces :(

I would say my OH will have words with his sister as he is furious, but her husband is a law onto himself and she doesn't seem to have any say.

It;s very common behaviour amongst those who get "instant gratification" with newness/esp puppies till they grow up and get boring and not cute anymore!, we deal with this all the time iwht the rescue, it is frustrating as hell. A family memeber on my OH's side does it, I have already taken on one dog they royally fecked up, turned him into an nervous aggressive wreck. There is not alot you can do they sound ignorant as hell and even worse they have the space (yard) to chuck said dog out when the time comes.
Gum tree is full of such cast off's.
I would have a word and step away and save your blood pressure.

That is so sad, wouldn't your parents in law be able to talk to them as they have already had to rehome a large dog and are struggling with a small one. This happens so often when people realise they can't cope its such a shame that they don't research the breeds before they go and buy the dog. As others have said a bored german shepherd will soon be a pain to deal with.
