To cut a long story short, my horse fractured his radius on November 16th, after about 6 weeks cross tying he was allowed loose in the stable and a week after that I was to walk him in hand. He had xrays a week ago hoping that he would be allowed turnout in a very very small paddock but his legs not quite healed enough so hes to be xrayed again in another weeks time. I was so pleased to allow him loose in the stable but he gets so excited and bronks in the stable which is still a risk for his leg, the walks out are getting worse as he is scared of his own shadow, Im worrying about turning him out as he will explode and tonight hes like a loony, so stressed out as he can hear something in the distance but cant see it because of the fog. Im a born worrier but tonight Ive left him to it with the attitude 'theres nothing I can do'. Now at home the worry is starting to hit and Im now thinking he will end up with colic or something.
Weve used sedalin a few times to walk him but it really knocks him out for hours even with only 1ml so Ive been trying to avoid giving it him. Anyone know of a calmer that works, when I mentioned it to the vet he said they are really hit and miss.
Sorry for the moan, just really fed up.

What a nightmare situation...

Different calmers seem to work on different horses so you might have to try a few different ones until you find the one that works on your boy. My personal preference is Cool, Calm & Collected by Equifeast

We had a similar situation with my daughters pony who had a star fracture 2 years ago.. She spent 6 weeks cross tied and through most of that was on ACP tablets, up to 6 a day and shes only 13 hh! You wouldn't have thought she was anything cos she was still very spooky so hate to think what she would have been like without! I was also petrified to turn her out, gave her another 10 days after the x rays gave the all clear, she did explode and I was just waiting for the crack but she was fine and is now back to normal. We do use Steady Up on her for everyday calming and this does work, I thought she had just slowed down with old age but tried her without and she was as nutty as ever. I am sure your fellow will be fine but I do sympathise with you, it is a very stressful time. Ours managed to have a mild colic whilst she was cross tied! . One tip, when you do turn him out try and find an area with lots of grass, and maybe leave him a little bit hungry beforehand so hopefully he will go out and graze. Sorry for the long post, hope it helps. Sending you lots of positive vibes.

Thanks for the replies, I will try to get a calmer tomorrow.
Thanks Murphysminder for sharing your experience, it makes me feel so much better to know someone else has been through this and come out the other side. You know he was so calm cross tied apart from once when a horse on the yard got loose and I thought my boy was going to come over the door. Took me about a week to get him to eat from his haynet away from the door, it was pitiful to see him going back and forths and more stressed than when tied up.
Im a bit dubious about trying steady up as it didnt work for my nutty mare but then what doesnt work for one may work for another.
I really sympathise with those who've had long term box rest, its hard enough doing 3 months!
Thanks again

Oh Louise, i really feel for you!
Sorry you're feeling so down, it's awful i know, but you have coped so well up to now and i'm sure he will be fine.
The horses on our yard are spooky tonight, William included.
Will Helen take a peek at him for you later? I'm a worrier myself so i know how you feel.
Keep strong, it won't be long now.
Jo

Hiya Jo,
Horses eh dont they make you worry.
They are all checked later on so Im sure if theres a problem I will get the dreaded phone call.
Think its been one of them weeks or more like months, on top of Jay and moving house my step father died 3 weeks ago and my 15 year old brothers come to live with us. Our mum died last May, its been a horrible year all round so Im probably feeling a bit sorry for myself.
Sorry to go on.
Hope Williams ok
Take care
Louise

your horse sounds like his injury is coming on lovely. mines still on box rest for a damaged tendon sheath (18 weeks now) and last week he was a nightmare trying to lead out.
so i 1/2'd his feed upped his hay and lead him out 5 times for a few days instead of 3. he's been alot better this week,
its horrible isn't it when you know they want to go out but you can't i'm worryed all the time about him making himself worse.

hope you get the all clear soon.
