Anyone got any tips for teaching "stay" - she doesn't really do staying still at the best of times!

The way I taught Otto was to get him to sit, tell him to stay, wait a second and give him a treat, build it up and then start taking a step away, step back and treat, building up to walking away from him (facing him) and walking back then giving him a treat. If he moved before he was supposed to, we went back a step.

I never told him to stay walked away and called him, because IMO that teaches them to anticipate moving.

If Otto can learn to stay still, anyone can, the boy has ants in his pants!

Well, just so as not to disappoint Otto, but I have to credit Dr Weevil for the photo as she took it whilst we were out at the weekend

Otto picked it up very quickly, he really surprised me! I just used to do 10 mins in the evening, and the first time we tried it I was walking right to the bottom of the corridor and back before we finished.

He had also been taught to sit with a hand signal before learning stay, so I would keep my hand up in the sit signal whilst backing away, I think it helped to keep his attention.

She is soooooooo cute!

Ok i have a pretty easy way to teach stay.
With the lead on get him to sit next to you and then hold the lead above his head and use this as your anchor. Then take one step to the side and go back to him reward and release.
Keep doing this until you can take a step away and stay there for 5 seconds. Then when he has mastered this, try stepping to the side and then stepping in front of him so that you are facing him and then go back to his side reward and release. All the time keeping the lead slightly taught above his head like and anchor. Then you can work on getting further away.

Thank you,

but I'm sorry, I don't quite understand what you mean. How do I use the lead to stop her from following me...?

I have been using hand gestures when I've been doing sit, so shall keep using them and do a you suggest trying stay. She's wrapped around my feet now asleep making sweet snoozy noises!!

It must be very exciting, so far we've had growling, yelping and running!

I must admit, the sleek coat does appeal to me, Otto had to have a bath yesterday he got so foul and stinking!

I have put three floor tiles in a triangle, so that when the dogs leave their spot, when I put them back, I know exactly where to put them.

I then move the tiles around the field so that it isn't too sterile, bit of variety, and then as Hen says, increase the number of paces you step away from the dog each time.

I am attempting to get my lad to do the 'long down', the trainers at our club use a long line, tie it to the fence, put the dogs in a down and just leave them there. After a while the dogs are so used to it, they do it without the lead.

Reckon it'll be a LONG time before we do the long down

yeah its quite hard to understand umm.
Hold the lead as if your trying to lift it up to the sky and you can hold her in that place and if she stands up from the sit go back to her side and put her back in the sit and try again.

Ooh she sounds like a star!
With my lab, we asked him to go into sit position and rewarded him! We then told him to stay along with holding your hand up, palm facing him! He then got to associate this gesture with the command stay! We would then walk back one step repeating command and gesture pausing and then going back to him giving lots of praise and treat!
He caught on really quickly - carried on doing this taking another step back untill we were quite far away and introducing turning your back! Buds stay is fab, can ask him to stay in middle of field walk off and he stays
smile.gif

Not sure if that is any use but that a what worked for me

sorry if it reads total garbage I wrote it on my phone LOL xx
