Went up to do the 2 ponies i look after today and there was a black ribbon tied to the gate

Ive heard about this being a sign for horses to be stolen later

I removed the ribbon but im so worried for the ponies, the older one has been stolen before and i know of loads of pretty welsh's being nicked and the pony is welsh a.
I told the owner of the ponies (i do all their care she just goes up occasionally) and she wasnt worried.
Now the padlocks arnt heavy duty, and the fencings not very strong so they could easily be stolen ..

I love the ponies like my own and i hate that theres nothing i can do ....
Anyone else had this happen in kent?
Thanks in advance
I so hope this is just a wind up!

Have you told the police?

I dont own horses/land so it wouldnt be taken into account as far as i know.
The owner of the horses isnt botherd, and ive warned her ect. But then again i have had to fight tooth and nail to have the fat welsh a on restricted grazing

You just have to make it as hard as possible for them to get the ponies out. Dont leave headcollars, get heavier chains, etc. Ask neighbours to keep an eye out and tell the police

I woulnt have thought of it as an issue normally as its next to a busy stud.
But the older horse has been stolen before, and recoverd without neighbours noticing!

It shouldnt matter that you dont own the horses in relation to reporting it to the police. You just need to make them aware that you are concerned as if there has been recent thefts in your area they will know and will probably keep an eye on your yard and also add the information as intelligence. They may just send a patrol car to circle the area whilst they are out but thats better than nothing.

Never heard of the black ribbon.

If they are going to steal them, why would they leave a calling card?

Yiu must report it though

Not necicarily a ribbion, just somthing out of ordinary to fence/gate to mark which horses to take

most theives will leave a plait in a particular horse to be taken, or mark with baler twine, ribbon, tape, spray on the concrete outside a gate etc, its a marker for someone ELSE to see where to "collect".

Do report it to horsewatch and your local police.......and maybe put signs up from horsewatch also, something similar to countrywatch in Berkshire/Oxon. We get them free.

Hey, what happened in the end? Read you post last night and was worried for you! Would've PMed you but it said that you don't accept PMs! Had my fingers crossed! xxx
