My little brother (W) came up to stay with us this weekend (he's 8 and I'm 23) and I decided to take him for a hack round the farm. He hardly ever rides and when he does its when he comes to see me and usually confined to the school of end of lunge.
Anyhow, we went for a lovely ride round the farm, he rode my Section B and I led them off of my mare. W really enjoyed himself and was chattering on about how he wanted to go for a longer ride the next day. Anyhow, on way home we were coming along this really muddy narrow track and I'd forgotten that there was a tree down. It was only a mini tree - a step over job, so tied rein round pony's neck and i rode over it first and then W rode over it - V naughty pony decided that actually he would jump it, and leapt about 3 feet into the air - total cat leap style and the child literally went upwards thelwell style and straight down into about a foot deep patch of mud
. Needless to say had an absolute nightmare trying to get him back on the pony but managed it in the end and rode the last 5 mins back to yard with a very wet and brown child. Fortunately my Mum found it all rather amusing, i think my dad was horrified but then he has never liked horses much!!
I got him back on board though today and we just stuck to lunging in the school
