Really would like to breed my mare next year, do not no where to start thinking about breeding her with a Tb id. She is Tb. 15.2 hh. What are the best web pages to go on to have a look. or stud farms to chat with ect ect..

To start you go here: http://www.clevelandbay.com/stallions.htm

any of these stallions will give you a lovely CB cross!

I would also add you need to know that you can actually breed from your mare & that she is free of any problems that might effect her. Even having an idea of what type of horse you might like to breed wont bring any guarantees. It is a huge gamble, but if you go ahead good luck.

1) Critically assess the mare: is she good enough to breed from?

2) Get a good reproductive vet to assess the mare's reproductive health - at least a scan, speculum examination etc. but also a uterine biopsy and cytology workup could save you a lot of money in the long run. We had a mare here a while ago who was going to be bred, but we had her examined and found a heart problem, as well as uterine issues - so we didn't breed her - saved the owner a lot of money & time, and saved the mare possible illness/complications if she did get in foal.

3) If you decide to go ahead, decide on natural or AI (semi-dependent on stallion and the availability of the semen) but also take into account the mare's general wellbeing, how she behaves in season etc. etc.

4) Look for a good stud & or vet to deal with the breeding side for you; assuming you choose AI, and the semen is available chilled. If not, and you use natural, make sure the stud you send her to has a good reputation.

5) Get the vet to induce oestrus using PG or P&E to minimise the time she is at stud etc. and make sure she is scanned. If she is at a stud, they should be able to organise the shipping of the semen for you. The vet or stud staff will then inseminate her.

6) Leave her at the stud/vet for a 14-18 day scan, or bring her home and get her scanned at yours.

That's a rough 6-point plan. Very rough. There are some good sites around, PM me for links or more info.

before even doing that you need to define WHY you want to breed from your mare and if the answer to that question is because she has an inherent unsoundness or condition (not injury) that makes her unable to be ridden then the real answer is that you shouldn't breed from her

then get someone objective - your vet perhaps - to assess for you or alongside you -- whether your mare is good enough conformation to breed from

does she have good feet or weak, brittle horn and flat soles - if so - remember the old adage no foot no horse....

and then consider if you have the time, the money, the space and the ability to cope with a mare, foaling, the foal, and the decision to keep the foal or sell it

remember - fools breed horses for wise men to ride

Definitely get all tests done by your vet to ensure that you can actually breed from her. I have posted before but have just spent £2K trying to get my horse in foal to find she has a uterine infection that is practically impossible to treat

Don't breed just because she has the bits and you feel like it! is she really good enough to breed from? Why do you want to breed? Don't forget, if anything goes wrong you could lose both the baby and your mare.

I want to breed from her next year, I want to keep the foal to bring on for my daughter, as 3/4 years down the line she will be ready for a super cool horse LOL. and because I no she could be a supper mum...x Thanks for all the posts
