I'm totally amazed how scared kids are of dogs!! opinions??

As post says really, i don't really get it!!

We were in a pub beer garden on Sunday in a country but touristy pub. Dogs were being good for once.

A family with two little kids came in and the kids came over wanting to stroke Star, all was good because Star was nice and soft. Then Star turned around and OMG!! all hell broke loose!! kid fell on her arse and ran away SCREAMING!! They then wouldn't come within 30 ft of the dogs because they were so evil, and made us feel a bit bad really - all because Star turned around!

It's not the first time it's happened either, they are either terrified or come and pester them! why don't people teach their kids how to behave around dogs??

some kids may have been bitten/gotten jumped on my a dog but some have no excuse lol

I was bitten by a boxer when I was 3 and i love dogs, never been scared of themm...

Urrgg, little boys are the worst!! Half of them like to yell at them or torment them in some way!! Good job my dogs are friendly thats all i can say!

Not had any problems with fear, thank goodness. Stella tolerates the lot--ears pulled, children trying to pick her up. I did just about FREAK when a sadistic little girl once tried to put a pencil in Stella's eye; that was definitely a job for judo Prose

Kids want to stroke Beastie as she's so cute and furry looking. Thing is, she hates kids! So I don't let kids near her. They're scared of Tina. Purely on her size I think as she's big for a lab. As for Cindy they think 'ohhh, cute puppy!' but Cindy ain't wired right. I think she has a screw loss somewhere!
 
I often think that parents do nothing to help either, almost teaching them to be terrified. All children should be wary of strange dogs but I have seen children burst into tears at just the sight of a dog across the street. my niece is 14months old and finds our standard poodle (doesn't look ferocious but is big) hilarious. I think it's good for her to grow up around him and learn to treat him correctly
 
I have this alot.... partly down to where I live.

Actually yesterday I walked my doggie past a man with two smallish children - who both screamed and hid as I walked past them - the dad was giggling slightly at their behaviour

which is not the way to teach them how to behave in the presence of dogs.

I should add that my doggie did nothing - just walked calmly past them, ignoring them...

Also - in the park I had two kids come up and ask if they can stroke him - I say yes (he loves kids) and he gets all pleased to see them - tries to lick one on the face - cue massive screaming fit and running away from us at top speed.... I did explain to them that perhaps that might incite the dog to chase them (although mine didn't)...
 
a lot of it the parents making such a big thing of dogs, i have had it when i take mine out that the kid gets picked up before they go past which then causes the kid to cry un become more scared drives me nuts as these are the type of people to end up with a dog they cannot handle
 
I do think children should be taught not to approach strange dogs unless they ask the owner first if it's ok (The amount of kids I've had diving to give Beastie a hug!) but they shouldn't be taught to be afraid.

She is a real wee pet. Loves walks, think she's a labrador, very stubborn but so loveable! And she loves the camera

They do require a good bit of grooming and a clip every 8 weeks, I get charged £29. That includes bath, skin check, anal glands, nails and ears. My groomer is very good with her. Really shop around for a good groomer as I took her to a new groomer one day and they lopped her beard off! I was so upset.

we've always had standard poodles so well used to the grooming side. the place we use is even called a poodle parlour! but i've just bought a terraced house and a standard poodle would be too big to have running around.

she's gorgeous.

oh and sorry for going off point everyone! just spotted a pretty dog and got carried away

When I was very small, like pre-school, I remember I was scared of dogs. I think it had a lot to do with the diet of fairy stories I was fed that involved wolves, like Red Riding Hood and Three Little Pigs, and to a child a wolf and a dog look the same, plus they are BIG when you are small.

When I started to have my own opinions though, I loved dogs, although I never had one until I left home. Now they're my life.

There is definitely a lot of parent prejudice that kids pick up on though, which is sad. My kids have grown up with dogs and their childhood has been the richer for it.
 
My little niece (4 1/2) is the other extreme - she spent the whole time at Gatcombe this year walking up to people saying 'please may I stroke your dog, it is lovely'

People were absolutely stunned - but then she has always been brought up with dogs so is very used to them. Quite sweet really

You should try living here! I get a dozen strangers a day pet Stella without asking me, more at the weekends when the tourists are out in force. It's a good job Stella's special move is plopping down for a belly rub.
 
I have people drag their kids away from my very child friendly Dobe yet would allow them to stroke my very definitely non-child friendly Vizsla. Sometimes I have to tell people over and over again not to touch her, they then counter it with "Oh but she is so pretty". I just avoid kids now when I have Tally with me. I have found the most dramatic and silly kids are teenage girls showing off in front of teenage boys. Infuriating isn't it?

To be fair, people may not have the opportunity.

My nephew only really comes in to contacts with dogs when he is with me at the farm. He is always a little reticent to start off with, but soon becomes confident around them. And will happily play with them. He is 4.

To a lot of children dogs pose a real threat because they are (in many cases) large animals - and they just are not sure about them.
 
Have had problems with kids wanting to stroke my border collie as she looks sweet but they cringe away from my pitt bull x and my mastiff x and unfortunatley the border collie is the only one out off the three that is likley to bite. When my daughter was growing up always taught her to ask first and if permission was given then to aproach the dog slowly.
 
I was so scared of dogs after an incident when i was being chased by a little dog whilst riding my bike as a teenager. It kept jumping up barking at my ankle as I rode...I've never ridden a bike so fast!

It wasnt till a family member bought a dog 3 years ago did I get more confident around dogs. Now I have an English Springer and I'm after another!

I think a lot dont see dogs day to day so are unsure how to behave around them.
Some may have had a bad experiance,others are just odd.
Hope Star dog wasnt upset by the children's silly behaviour.
 
I stopped taking Dante up the school as too many times I would get to the gate and he would be surrounded by kids stroking him (and where were the mothers asking me if it was okay?????). He's never shown any aggression to kids in his life, but still!

I always tell my two not to touch other dogs unless they ask me, but they arent too bothered by other dogs, they probably get their fill at home! Now I walk Amber with a muzzle (until I see the behaviourist tommorow hopefully) people cross the road! I feel like saying, 'she loves people, its other dogs she doesnt like' but from their point of view they dont know that I suppose.

I have a Dalmation. Kids and their idiotic parents drive me nuts. She is a dog, a big dog, a big unpredictable dog not an "awwww look theres a spotty dog like in the film" que loads of kids rushing over to stroke and the parents encouraging them. Me having a heart attack and desperately trying to keep the dog away from them and tell them not to touch her.
Idiots.
